Wazzara esta próxima al lanzamiento de su álbum de corta duración “Ombreine”. La agrupación de origen suizo recientemente presentó a su público este material previo a su publicación que será el 30 de abril. La Magia Absalón tuvo la oportunidad de entrevistar a Barbara Brawand (voces, guitarra) y George Necola (bajo) en fechas previas a su concierto de lanzamiento en el que se platicó acerca del crowdfunding, la inspiración detrás de sus canciones y su evolución como banda.
LMA: Gracias por la oportunidad de entrevistarlos para La Magia Absalón. “Ombreine” es su segundo álbum de corta duración que cuenta con la participación de Deniz Lebovci (batería) y Tom Kuzmic (guitarra). ¿Cómo influyó en el sonido de la banda su inclusión como miembros permanentes?
Barbara: ¡Gracias por recibirnos!
George: Barbara, como compositora principal de las canciones, tenía una idea clara de cómo debía sonar todo. Pasamos bastante tiempo explicando su idea a los nuevos miembros de la banda. Desde mi perspectiva, fue una buena adición a wazzara pero también prolongó el proceso de composición de canciones como lo era antes. Estamos muy contentos con el resultado, la actitud positiva en la banda y esperamos trabajar de manera más eficiente en el futuro con una configuración de banda completa.
LMA: Como antesala a la publicación del álbum, la banda está preparando un concierto especial que tendrá lugar en Met-Bar Lenzburg el 01 de abril mismo que contará con algunos invitados. ¿Cómo se siente la banda al poder mostrar al mundo su último trabajo?
Barbara: Siempre es emocionante revelar material nuevo a los oyentes y mostrar el progreso por el que atraviesa cada banda al elaborar nuevas canciones. Hemos estado trabajando en nuestras nuevas piezas durante varios meses y tenemos mucha curiosidad por los comentarios que puedan recibir. Considero mis composiciones musicales como mis hijos y, por lo tanto, revelarlas al mundo me deja en un estado ambivalente de ansiedad y emoción al mismo tiempo. Siempre hay canciones que se conectan con la comunidad de una buena manera, y hay algunas que, por alguna razón, no parecen funcionar en vivo. Esto es algo que solo puedes descubrir cuando los tocas en el escenario.
LMA: Anteriormente, la banda ha recurrido al crowdfunding como un medio para apoyarse con los gastos que implica el proceso de producción de un álbum, como fue el caso de su álbum debut “Cycles”. Desde su experiencia, ¿cómo favorece este tipo de plataformas para impulsar a los nuevos talentos que surgen dentro de la escena?
George: Primero, ¡gracias a todos los que participaron en el crowdfunding! En segundo lugar, creo que es triste que las bandas tengan que hacer crowdfunding para hacer su música. Todavía estamos en una especie de ‘pole position’ porque solía grabar y mezclar una tonelada de álbumes de metal y rock y, por lo tanto, tengo algunos de los equipos necesarios y sé cómo hacerlo. Fuimos muy efectivos grabando y produciendo el EP. Las guitarras, el bajo y las voces se hicieron en casa usando Cubase, SM7b, cabina de grabación para voces, cloud lifter, TwoNotes CaptorX, Avenson Audio Dis, convertidores RME babyface y una tonelada de efectos analógicos y digitales. La edición estuvo a cargo de Andrei Jumuga (Dordeduh, etc.), la mezcla la realizó en Alemania Andreas Rosczyk, la masterización estuvo a cargo de Jonas Ekström (northmastering.com) y la batería fue grabada por el ingeniero de sonido suizo Serge Spiga en una sala real con baterías reales. La mayor parte del dinero del crowdfunding se destinó al trabajo realizado por estas personas. El resto del dinero se destinó a la producción de merchandising y un videoclip de la banda.
Entonces, estoy muy feliz de que pudimos financiarlo con el dinero de los fanáticos y no invirtiendo todo nosotros mismos. Se puede argumentar que pedir dinero es ofensivo o está reservado para los artistas más establecidos, pero debes comenzar en un punto. Esperamos encontrar un sello para el próximo lanzamiento, de modo que no tengamos que pedirles a los fanáticos que proporcionen el dinero, sino que un sello podría prefinanciar un posible nuevo lanzamiento.
LMA: La banda atravesó por un proceso de promoción distinto cuando se publicó su álbum debut “Cycles” el cual se produjo en medio de la pandemia y con ello, las limitaciones de todos conocemos. En el caso de “Ombreine”, el panorama es distinto pues ya se tiene la posibilidad de tener un acercamiento con sus seguidores para poder presentar su propuesta musical. ¿Cuáles son las expectativas de la banda para dar a conocer su propuesta sonora?
Barbara: Sí, afortunadamente el escenario ahora es diferente. Además de nuestro espectáculo de lanzamiento el 1 de abril, estamos muy contentos de haber sido invitados al hermoso Dark Troll Festival en Alemania, que tendrá lugar del 18 al 20 de mayo en Bornstedt, Alemania. Es la primera vez que wazzara toca en el extranjero y planeamos adquirir más espectáculos con el apoyo de nuestro querido agente de reservas Christoph en Parnell Booking. ¡Estamos ansiosos por todo lo que está por venir!
LMA: En algunas entrevistas, se ha mencionado que la fuente de inspiración en términos líricos se relaciona con la experiencia personal y como la belleza que se encuentra a nuestro alrededor es una inspiración para salir avante ante las dificultades. En el caso de “Ombreine”, ¿se continúa explorando esta temática? Me parece interesante la lógica que desarrollan en las canciones pues abre un espacio a la interpretación.
Barbara: Siempre me alegra escuchar que las letras y las canciones dejan espacio para la interpretación. Así es como debería funcionar: cada oyente mira el material ofrecido desde una perspectiva diferente y sobre la base de su propia experiencia y visión individual del mundo. Cuando escribo letras, busco que ese espacio no esté bloqueado, sino que esté abierto de par en par. En el momento en que lanzas una pieza musical al mundo, comienza a desarrollar una vida propia, y ese es uno de los aspectos más interesantes de crear cosas.
Sabía que “Ombreine”, como nuestro tercer lanzamiento, debería ser también la tercera parte de una especie de trilogía. “zessa”, el primer EP lanzado en 2019, se inspiró profundamente en la imagen de un manantial que se convierte en una inundación y, por lo tanto, podría verse como el ‘álbum de nacimiento’. El siguiente álbum, “Cycles”, estuvo dedicado a la fertilidad, entre otros, y en él simboliza el viaje de la vida. “Ombreine” se centra en el fin de todas las cosas, también en la vanidad de nuestra existencia. Representa, por así decirlo, la tercera parte de un ciclo de vida, que está fuertemente determinado por dejar ir y, al final, por la muerte.
Pero volviendo a tu pregunta inicial: la naturaleza y su belleza, pero también su destructividad, fue nuevamente una gran fuente de inspiración para mí al componer las nuevas canciones y escribir las letras. Además de eso, estoy fuertemente motivada por la historia de represión contra el género femenino, o energía, que se encuentra en nuestras sociedades desde hace milenios. La injusticia y la monstruosidad me llevaron a escribir la letra de "visiûne", como lo hizo para "Solanum" y "Fissures" en nuestro álbum de 2021 "Cycles".
LMA: Wazzara es una fusión de distintos géneros musicales dentro de la escena del metal por lo que es algo complejo encasillarlos en uno en específico. Ustedes se definen a sí mismos como moongaze/post metal ¿cómo describirían su propuesta musical considerando la evolución que la banda ha tenido después de tres producciones?
George: Es 100% la visión de Barbara. Sin Barbara, no hay wazzara. Hacemos todo lo posible para apoyarla y hacer que su visión se haga realidad. Siento que ella se desarrolló mucho personalmente y, por lo tanto, la música también ha avanzado automáticamente. Nunca podremos sonar como tu banda favorita, solo podemos convertirnos en tu banda favorita ya que la oferta es única. No estoy tratando de venderte wazzara, trato de explicarte que Bárbara mezcla grunge, black metal, blackgaze, doom, incluso ingredientes pop en la gran olla de la música de wazzara y es tan único que creo que ella está lista para algo aquí. El público aún no ha reconocido el gran arte, pero tal vez el próximo lanzamiento atraiga a una mayor cantidad de oyentes. 😉
En “Zessa” estaba tranquila, relajada y profunda. “Cycles” fue organizado, orientado hacia el futuro y un poco fácil de disfrutar, el nuevo EP es oscuro, profundo y visionario y estoy ansioso por escuchar las ideas de Barbara para el próximo álbum.
LMA: Wazzara está cercana a su primera década de vida en la que han atravesado una serie de cambios que han coadyuvado a consolidarse como banda. ¿Qué aprendizajes han obtenido a lo largo de este proceso?
George: 1. hacer música en 2023 es más difícil que hace una década. La gente solo quiere escuchar lo que ya sabe. La diversificación ya no existe. Los medios están llenos de las llamadas personas individuales, arte, estilo de vida, pero en mi opinión, lamentablemente se vuelve más uniforme cada año. 2. Tocar en vivo después de la crisis del virus es difícil. Vimos a menudo que la gente se quedaba en casa, en lugar de pasar la noche en un concierto. Las entradas para los conciertos ya no se compran por adelantado, los promotores de festivales no pueden calcular el riesgo de un evento y, por lo tanto, solo invitan a las estrellas ya conocidas a un festival. Todavía me divierte mucho presentar nuestro material a los fanáticos, todavía voy a conciertos y quiero alentar a todos a hacer lo mismo para mantener viva la escena.

INTERVIEW: WAZZARA
Wazzara is nearing the release of her short-lived album “Ombreine”. The group of Swiss origin recently presented this material to its audience prior to its publication, which will be on April 30th. La Magia Absalón had the opportunity to interview Barbara Brawand (vocals, guitar) and George Necola (bass) on dates prior to their launch concert in which they talked about crowdfunding, the inspiration behind their songs and their evolution as a band.
LMA: Thank you for the opportunity to interview you for La Magia Absalón. “Ombreine” is their second EP, and it’s the first one with Deniz Lebovci (drums) and Tom Kuzmic (guitar). How did their inclusion as permanent members influence the sound of the band?
Barbara: Thank you for having us!
George: Barbara as main composer of the songs had a distinct idea how everything needs to sound. We spent quite a while on explaining her idea to the new band members. From my perspective it was a good addition to wazzara but it was also pro-longing the songwriting process as it was before. We are very happy with the result, the positive attitude in the band and looking forward to work more efficiently in the future with a full band setup.
LMA: As a prelude to the release of the album, the band is preparing a special concert that will take place at Met-Bar Lenzburg on April 1st with some guests. How does the band feel to be able to show the world their latest work?
Barbara: It’s always exciting to reveal new material to the listeners and show the progress every band is going through when elaborating new songs. We’ve been working on our new pieces for several months now and are very curious for the feedback they may receive. I consider my musical compositions as kind of my children, and therefore revealing them to the world leaves me in an ambivalent state of being both anxious and excited at the same time. There are always songs that connect with the community in a good way, and there are those that for some reasons don’t really seem to work live. This is something you can only figure out when playing them on stage.
LMA: Previously, the band has resorted to crowdfunding to support yourself with the expenses involved in the production process of an album, as was the case with their debut album “Cycles”. From your experience, how do you favor this type of platform to promote new talents that emerge within the scene?
George: First, thanks to everyone who participated in the crowdfunding! Second, I think its sad that bands have to crowdfund to get their music done. We are still in some sort of ‘pole position’ because I used to record and mix a ton of metal and rock albums, and therefore own some of the equipment needed and know how to do it. We were very effective on recording and producing the EP. Guitars, Bass, Vocals were done at home using Cubase, SM7b, recording booth for vocals, cloud lifter, TwoNotes CaptorX, Avenson Audio Dis, RME babyface converters and a ton of analog and digital fx. Editing was done by Andrei Jumuga (Dordeduh etc.), Mixing was done in Germany by Andreas Rosczyk, Mastering went to Jonas Ekström (Northmastering.com) and drums were recorded by Swiss sound engineer Serge Spiga in a real room with real drums. Most of the crowdfunding money went towards the work provided by these people. The rest of the money went into the production of merchandise and a band video clip.
So, I am super happy that we were able to finance it from money of fans and not investing everything ourselves. One can argue that asking for money is offensive or reserved for the more established artists, but you need to start at one point. We hope to find a label for the next release so we don’t have to ask the fans to supply the money, rather a label could pre-finance a potential new release.
LMA: The band went through a different promotion process when their debut album "Cycles" was released, which occurred during the pandemic and with it, the limitations of all of us know. In the case of “Ombreine”, the scenario is different since you already have the possibility of getting closer to your followers to be able to present your musical proposal. What are the expectations of the band to publicize their sound proposal?
Barbara: Yes, fortunately the scenario is different now. Besides our release show on April 1, we are very happy to be invited to beautiful Dark Troll Festival in Germany, taking place on May 18-20 in Bornstedt, Germany. It’s the first time for wazzara to play abroad, and we plan to acquire more shows with the support of our dear booking agent Christoph at Parnell Booking. We’re looking forward to all that is to come!
LMA: In some interviews, you have been mentioned that the source of inspiration in lyrical terms is related to personal experience and how the beauty that is around us is an inspiration to get out of difficulties before. In the case of “Ombreine”, is this theme still being explored? I find the logic that develops in the songs interesting because it opens a space for interpretation.
Barbara: I’m always happy to hear that the lyrics and songs leave space for interpretation. That’s how it should work – every listener looks at the material offered from a different perspective and on basis of his own experience and individual view on the world. When writing lyrics, I aim for that space not to be blocked, but to be open wide. The moment you release a musical piece to the world, it starts to develop a life of its own, and that’s one of the most interesting aspects of creating things.
I knew that “Ombreine” as our third release should be also the third part of a kind of trilogy. “zessa”, the first EP released in 2019, was deeply inspired by the image of a spring becoming a flood and thus could be seen as the ‘birth album’. The following album, “Cycles”, was dedicated to fertility, amongst others, and therein symbolizes the journey of life. “Ombreine” is focusing on the end of all things, also the vanity of our existence. It stands, if you will, for the third part of a life cycle, which is strongly determined by letting go and – in the end – death.
But returning to your initial question: nature and its beauty, but also its destructiveness, was again a big source of inspiration for me when composing the new songs and writing the lyrics. Besides that, I am strongly driven by the history of suppression against the female gender – or energy – that lies upon our societies since millennia. The injustice and monstrosity therein led me to write the lyrics for “visiûne”, as it did for “Solanum” and “Fissures” on our 2021 album “Cycles”.
LMA: Wazzara is a fusion of different musical genres within the metal scene, so it is somewhat complex to pigeonhole them in a specific one. You define yourselves as moongaze/post metal, how would you describe your musical proposal considering the evolution that the band has had after three productions?
George: It’s 100% the vision of Barbara. Without Barbara, no wazzara. We do our best to support her to make her vision become reality. I feel that she developed a lot personally and therefore the music has automatically advanced as well. We will never be able to sound like your favorite band, we can only become your favorite band as the offering is quite unique. I am not trying to sell you wazzara, I try to explain that Barbara mixes grunge, black metal, blackgaze, doom, even pop ingredients into the great pot of wazzara’s music and it’s so unique that I think she is up for something here. The public has not yet recognized the great art but maybe the next release will attract larger masses of listeners. 😉
Zessa was calm, relaxed and deep. Cycles was organized, forward oriented and kinda easy to enjoy, the new EP is dark, deep & visionary and I am looking forward to hearing Barbara’s ideas for the next album.
LMA: Wazzara is close to their first decade of life in which they have gone through a series of changes that have helped to consolidate as a band. What lessons have you learned throughout this process?
George: 1. making music in 2023 is more difficult than a decade ago. People only want to hear what they already know. Diversification is no longer existent. The media is full of so-called individual people, art, lifestyle, but in my opinion, it gets unfortunately more uniform every year. 2. Playing live after the virus crisis is tough. We saw often that people stayed at home, rather than spending a night at a concert. Concert tickets are no longer purchased in advance, festival promoters are unable to calculate the risk of an event and are therefore only inviting the already known stars to a festival. I still have lots of fun to present our material to the fans, I still go to concerts myself and I want to encourage everyone to do the same to keep the scene alive.
