Sven Biwo es un multi-instrumentalista originario de Castrop-Rauxel, Alemania. A finales del año pasado, se publicó su álbum debut “Life and Death” el cual fue grabado y producido por él mismo en su totalidad durante la pandemia. Posteriormente, se conforma como banda con la incorporación de Finley (guitarra), Justus (bajo) y Hanno (batería). Este álbum es una bocanada de aire ochentero en todo su esplendor con algunos acentos melódicos.
Los acordes de la guitarra nos introducen a Live Now, que se distingue por un sonido pesado y consiste a lo largo de los poco más de cuatro minutos de duración. Es inevitable la presencia de elementos musicales que evocan al NWOBHM. La ejecución vocal presenta armonías interesantes y coros pegadizos que enganchan al oyente.
Fountain of Youth muestra un sonido más melodico y rítmico en el que destaca el sonido de la guitarra y la batería. Sven Biwo realiza un trabajo excepcional en las voces jugando con tonos agudos creando ese contraste con la parte instrumental de la canción, además de que coquetea en partes específicas de la canción con algunos elementos vocales cercanos a los guturales.
Win This Fight es una cancion que te atrapa con el rasgueo de la guitarra al que se añade mayor velocidad a traves del golpeteo de la batería. Aunque el álbum cuenta con esta esencia del metal británico de la década de los 80's, esta canción en particular es quizás la que presenta mayor influencia en términos musicales.
Mother Earth es una canción que subliminalmente invita al headbanging gracias a la ejecución de la batería y la guitarra, esta última adquiriendo el rol dominante de la canción sobre la parte vocal en los primeros minutos. Posteriormente, se presenta un cambio abrupto de sonido por uno más agresivo y que después se torna hacia lo melódico. En definitiva, una de las mejores canciones de este álbum que da muestra de la creatividad de Sven Biwo para crear distintas sensaciones a través de la música.
Poor Boy me recuerda a las canciones que me introdujeron a la escena metal durante mi adolescencia. Una canción que no cuenta quizás con la mejor producción, pero que tiene los elementos necesarios para transmitir sentimientos al oyente: la combinación de guitarras acústicas y eléctricas, la batería que añade ritmo a la canción y una voz desgarradora.
I es una canción interesante por el contraste de sonidos que presenta, comenzando con la presencia de elementos melódicos gracias a las guitarras acústicas y los teclados que le añaden más profundidad hasta finalizar con un sonido más veloz y agresivo que denota esta influencia del neta europeo de la década de los 80's. La ejecución vocal es maravillosa.
Alone in the Dark tiene este sonido característico del speed metal contando con la guitarra y la batería como elementos principales. Una canción que tiene cierta influencia de bandas como Judas Priest. El solo de guitarra está bien ejecutado.
Judgment of the Gods es la canción con la que finaliza este álbum debut. Comienza con algunos sonidos que evocan a la naturaleza y al que se agrega los acordes de la guitarra acústica y contrasta con la intervención de la batería invitando subliminalmente al headbanging. Me agrada la ejecución vocal que tiene este toque misterioso y que se mantiene a lo largo de la canción. Considero que es una decisión acertada por parte de Biwo para finalizar con Life and Death.
Life and Death es un álbum divertido, sencillo y honesto. Es admirable el trabajo de Sven Biwo en la ejecución de los instrumentos y en la producción del álbum que recupera la esencia del heavy metal melódico de la vieja escuela. Es interesante cuan diversa es la escena metal en Alemania y estoy a la expectativa de lo que Biwo puede ofrecer al fusionar las ideas creativas de sus nuevos integrantes. Es un álbum que disfruté y que volvería a escuchar sin duda alguna.

REVIEW: LIFE AND DEATH (BIWO)
Sven Biwo is a multi-instrumentalist originally from Castrop-Rauxel, Germany. At the end of last year, his debut album "Life and Death" was released, which was recorded and produced by himself entirely during the pandemic. Subsequently, it is formed as a band with the addition of Finley (guitar), Justus (bass) and Hanno (drums). This album is a breath of eighties air in all its splendor with some melodic accents.
The guitar chords introduce us to Live Now, which is distinguished by a heavy sound and consists throughout the little more than four minutes of duration. The presence of musical elements that evoke the NWOBHM is inevitable. The vocal performance features interesting harmonies and catchy choruses that hook the listener.
Fountain of Youth shows a more melodic and rhythmic sound in which the sound of the guitar and drums stands out. Sven Biwo does an exceptional job on the vocals playing with high tones creating that contrast with the instrumental part of the song, plus he flirts in specific parts of the song with some vocal elements close to guttural.
Win This Fight is a song that catches you with the strumming of the guitar to which more speed is added through the pounding of the drums. Although the album has this essence of British metal from the 80's, this song is perhaps the most influential in musical terms.
Mother Earth is a song that subliminally invites headbanging thanks to the execution of the drums and the guitar, the latter acquiring the dominant role of the song over the vocal part in the first minutes. Subsequently, there is an abrupt change in sound for a more aggressive one that later turns towards the melodic. In short, one of the best songs on this album that shows Sven Biwo's creativity to create different sensations through music.
Poor Boy reminds me of the songs that introduced me to the metal scene in my teens. A song that perhaps does not have the best production, but that has the necessary elements to transmit feelings to the listener: the combination of acoustic and electric guitars, the drums that add rhythm to the song and a heartbreaking voice.
I is an interesting song due to the contrast of sounds that it presents, beginning with the presence of melodic elements thanks to the acoustic guitars and keyboards that add more depth to it, ending with a faster and more aggressive sound that denotes this influence of the European net of the decade of the 80's. The vocal execution is wonderful.
Alone in the Dark has this characteristic sound of speed metal with guitar and drums as main elements. A song that has some influence from bands like Judas Priest. The guitar solo is well executed.
Judgment of the Gods is the song with which this debut album ends. It begins with some sounds that evoke nature and to which acoustic guitar chords are added and contrasts with the intervention of the drums subliminally inviting headbanging. I like the vocal execution that has this mysterious touch and that is maintained throughout the song. I consider it a wise decision on Biwo's part to end Life and Death.
Life and Death is a fun, simple and honest album. The work of Sven Biwo in the execution of the instruments and in the production of the album that recovers the essence of old school melodic heavy metal is admirable. It's interesting how diverse the metal scene is in Germany and I'm looking forward to what Biwo can offer by fusing the creative ideas of their new members. It is an album that I enjoyed and that I would listen to again without a doubt.
