Vass/Katsionis ha publicado a principios de este mes su más reciente álbum Cynical Silence. El proyecto musical conformado por Bob Katsionis (ex-Firewind) y el cantante Billy Vass (TERRA INCΩGNITA) nos presentan una fusión de metal progresivo de la década de los 90’s y 00’s influenciados por bandas como Fates Warning, Queensryche en la que incluyen elementos modernos inspirados en Pain Of Salvation y Leprous. Aquí te presentamos nuestra reseña.
The End of Innocence tiene un comienzo bastante contundente en la que a través de los acordes de la guitarra se identifican estas notas características del metal progresivo. Billy Vass cuenta con una voz bastante sólida y que realiza este aporte melódico gracias a las armonías que realiza a lo largo de la canción. La parte instrumental entre la guitarra y los teclados me parece espectacular.
Restless Seeker nos presenta una propuesta musical más rítmica guiada por la batería y la guitarra. Me agrada cómo se desarrolla la interpretación vocal en la que se apuesta por tonos más agudos contando con algunas partes pegadizas en el coro que combinan bastante bien con las armonías vocales creadas por el cantante de TERRA INCΩGNITA.
Cynical Silence es la canción homónima de este segundo álbum y nos muestra una faceta más cercana al metal melódico con algunos tintes progresivos. Es una canción interesante por los distintos cambios de sonido que presenta dando esta impresión de ser una balada y de un momento a otro se cambia por completo aumentando considerablemente la potencia en la que Katsionis destaca por su técnica en la ejecución de los instrumentos musicales sin restarle crédito a Billy Vass quien realiza una gran interpretación.
Los acordes del bajo y los sintetizadores nos introducen a Vengeance Is Mine. Es quizás una de mis canciones favoritas del álbum que denota la capacidad creativa de ambos músicos. Amé el desarrollo de la canción yendo de menos a más alcanzando su punto más álgido en el coro siendo consistente hasta su término.
Radical Realist muestra un sonido más suave a comparación de sus antecesoras. Se denota la presencia del bajo como un elemento que contrasta con la parte vocal quien realiza este aporte melódico a la canción jugando con tonos medios y altos. Un aspecto que me agrada del álbum es que la presencia de los elementos progresivos se encuentra en su justa medida y las transiciones sonoras no se presentan de forma forzada.
Las notas del piano nos indican el inicio de A Day Without Loss en la que Billy Vass realiza una interpretación vocal espectacular empleando una voz lírica que emociona a cualquiera. En Invisible Thread se continua con este ambiente melódico donde las armonías vocales adquieren mayor protagonismo en su parte inicial, finalizando con un sonido más pesado destacando el solo de guitarra por parte de Bob Katsionis.
Los acordes de la guitarra nos introducen a Answers, una canción que rescata este aire de finales de la década de los 90’s y principios del 00’s en el metal progresivo. Muestra transiciones sonoras interesantes que permiten que la interpretación vocal destaque sobre la instrumentación.
My Island Is Home nos presenta una canción completamente distinta a lo presentado a lo largo del álbum. Interesante el uso de los sintetizadores junto con elementos ambientales como el mar o las aves para crear esta ambientación cargada de nostalgia y soledad que se refuerza con la voz de Billy Vass.
La capacidad creativa de Bob Katsionis no tienes límites. Cynical Silence me parece un álbum completo en el que cada una de las canciones que lo componen tiene algo que ofrecer al oyente. Billy Vass es un cantante muy completo y me encantó como emplea sus cualidades vocales para imprimirle una personalidad propia a cada canción. Grecia cuenta con una escena musical bastante sólida y este álbum pudiera ser un gran contendiente para lo más destacable del año.

Vass/Katsionis released their latest album Cynical Silence earlier this month. The musical project made up of Bob Katsionis (ex-Firewind) and singer Billy Vass (TERRA INCΩGNITA) present us with a fusion of progressive metal from the 90's and 00's influenced by bands like Fates Warning, Queensryche in which they include modern elements inspired by Pain Of Salvation and Leprous. Here we present our review.
The End of Innocence has a rather forceful beginning in which these characteristic notes of progressive metal are identified through the guitar chords. Billy Vass has a fairly solid voice, and he makes this melodic contribution thanks to the harmonies he makes throughout the song. The instrumental part between the guitar and the keyboards seems spectacular to me.
Restless Seeker presents us with a more rhythmic musical proposal guided by drums and guitar. I like how the vocal interpretation develops, in which it is committed to higher tones with some catchy parts in the chorus that combine quite well with the vocal harmonies created by the singer of TERRA INCΩGNITA.
Cynical Silence is the eponymous song from this second album and shows us a facet closer to melodic metal with some progressive overtones. It is an interesting song due to the different changes in sound that it presents, giving the impression of being a ballad and from one moment to the next it changes completely, considerably increasing the power in which Katsionis stands out for his technique in the execution of musical instruments without detracting from it. Credit to Billy Vass who does a great performance.
Bass chords and synths introduce us to Vengeance Is Mine. It is perhaps one of my favorite songs on the album that denotes the creative capacity of both musicians. I loved the development of the song going from less to more reaching its highest point in the chorus being consistent until its end.
Radical Realist shows a softer sound compared to its predecessors. The presence of the bass is denoted as an element that contrasts with the vocal part, which makes this melodic contribution to the song, playing with medium and high tones. One aspect that I like about the album is that the presence of the progressive elements is in its proper measure and the sound transitions are not presented in a forced way.
The piano notes indicate the beginning of A Day Without Loss in which Billy Vass performs a spectacular vocal performance using a lyrical voice that moves anyone. In Invisible Thread this melodic environment continues where the vocal harmonies take on greater prominence in the initial part, ending with a heavier sound highlighting the guitar solo by Bob Katsionis.
The guitar chords introduce us to Answers, a song that rescues this air of the late 90's and early 00's in progressive metal. It displays interesting sonic transitions that allow the vocal performance to stand out from the instrumentation.
My Island Is Home presents us with a completely different song from what is presented throughout the album. Interesting use of synthesizers together with environmental elements such as the sea or birds to create this atmosphere full of nostalgia and loneliness that is reinforced by the voice of Billy Vass.
Bob Katsionis' creative capacity has no limits. Cynical Silence seems to me like a complete album in which each of the songs that compose it has something to offer the listener. Billy Vass is a very complete singer and I loved how he uses his vocal qualities to give each song its own personality. Greece has a pretty solid music scene and this album could be a great contender for the highlights of the year.
