Biwo es una banda de heavy metal melódico originaria de Alemania. Este cuarteto publicó a finales del año pasado su álbum debut “Life and Death”. Sven Biwo, su vocalista platicó con La Magia Absalón acerca de sus influencias musicales, los retos en el proceso de grabación del álbum y sobre la inclusión de sus nuevos integrantes.
LMA: Muchas gracias por darnos la oportunidad de hacer esta entrevista para La Magia Absalón. ¿Cómo surge este interés por la música?
Sven: Tengo que agradecerte a ti. Mi hermano me mostró el camino hacia el heavy metal en ese entonces. Todavía vivía en la casa de nuestros padres en ese momento y escuchaba música a todo volumen durante el día, incluso para dormirse. Por supuesto, tienes una relación con el Heavy Metal a través de eso. Tuve mi primer contacto con Iron Maiden, Kiss y Manowar, y para mí todos parecían delincuentes (risas). Hasta el día de hoy, me he mantenido fiel al Heavy Metal y seguro que no va a cambiar. En algún momento, comencé a tocar la batería y mucho después continué con la guitarra. Y ahora, he llegado a un punto en el que también te ocupas de otros asuntos musicales: producción, negocios, etc.
LMA: Tengo entendido que Biwo estaba empezando a formarse como banda, pero estos planes cambiaron por la pandemia, ¿podrías contarnos un poco al respecto?
Sven: No fue fácil, eso es cierto. Justus y yo nos conocimos en un concierto benéfico y él incorporó a Hanno a la banda. Lamentablemente llegó la pandemia y todo quedó parado por el momento. Pero usé el tiempo libre en casa para escribir y grabar el álbum, porque tenía muchas ganas de lanzarlo. Desafortunadamente, nuestro tiempo es muy limitado en este planeta y simplemente no quería perder más tiempo. Todos no nos estamos volviendo más jóvenes. Pero a pesar de todo esto, nos hemos encontrado juntos y tocamos juntos varias veces a la semana. Armoniza muy bien y me alegro de haber encontrado a los chicos.
LMA: "Life and death" es el título de tu álbum debut. Musicalmente, tiene un estilo muy característico de los años 80, pero con un toque moderno y fresco. ¿Quiénes son esas bandas o artistas que fueron fuente de inspiración en la composición del disco?
Sven: Iron Maiden, Manowar, Majesty, Helloween, Running Wild, Grave Digger, Iced Earth, etc. ¡La lista podría ser interminable! Todas estas grandes bandas tocan heavy metal increíble a su manera. También hemos desarrollado nuestro propio estilo y tengo curiosidad por como sonarán las próximas canciones. Al final, las ideas para las canciones surgieron durante la improvisación. No persigo el objetivo de sonar como otra banda. Todo lo que sucede viene del corazón.
LMA: Un aspecto que es de admirarse es que el proceso de composición y grabación del álbum fue realizado por ti. ¿Qué retos supuso para ti como músico llevar a cabo todas las tareas en el estudio de grabación?
Sven: Creo que hoy en día tienes que ser algo más que un guitarrista o un cantante para tener éxito. Por supuesto, puedes subcontratar ciertas cosas a otras personas, pero prefiero hacer las cosas yo mismo. Para un ingeniero de mezclas es solo un trabajo que tiene que hacer, para mí es una pasión trabajar en mi música. Si encuentro a alguien que sea tan apasionado por la música como yo, entonces le pasaré las tareas. Pero realmente me permitió aprender mucho, y eso es lo más importante en la vida para ti personalmente. Es importante tener una idea de todo para que nadie pueda joderme.
LMA: En otras entrevistas has expresado que a nivel lírico las canciones que componen "Life and Death" provienen de experiencias personales. ¿La pandemia influyó en el proceso de escritura del álbum?
Sven: No realmente, solo salió la canción "Win This Fight". Pero también puedes verlo globalmente por cada pelea que tengas contigo mismo. Tampoco le tenía miedo a la pandemia ni al Corona. Por lo tanto, la pandemia realmente no me sorprendió. Hay bastantes otras enfermedades que también son muy malas. Y al final da igual si muero de COVID, cáncer o lo que sea.
LMA: Un aspecto del álbum que encuentro interesante es su portada. ¿Podrías contarnos un poco qué significa?
Sven: Refleja la vida. La Madre Tierra simbólicamente da vida y la recupera. Todos somos parte del ciclo de la vida en este planeta. Simplemente me encanta. Me gustaría ver que dejemos de robar la tierra como lo estamos haciendo ahora y comencemos a valorarla nuevamente, tomando solo lo que realmente necesitamos. Incluso con Iron Maiden el tema está presente una y otra vez.
LMA: Finley, Justus y Hanno se unieron a Biwo, quizás pasando de un proyecto en solitario a una banda. ¿Hay planes de componer un álbum fusionando sus ideas creativas?
Sven: Actualmente todavía estamos trabajando en las canciones del álbum para nuestros primeros conciertos en vivo. También tenemos algunas ideas para canciones nuevas, pero aún no hay nada concreto.
LMA: ¿Cuáles son los planes de Biwo para el futuro?
Sven: Buscaremos finalmente subir al escenario y continuar construyendo nuestra base de fans. Me encantaría tocar en México y Sudamérica en general. No conozco a nadie que enloquezca como los sudamericanos. Pero miramos el día a día. No tiene sentido soñar en grande y no trabajar en ello pieza por pieza. Buscamos mejorar un poco cada día.

Biwo is a melodic heavy metal band from Germany. This quartet released their debut album “Life and Death” at the end of last year. Sven Biwo, their vocalist spoke with La Magia Absalón about their musical influences, the challenges in the album recording process and about the inclusion of their new members.
LMA: Thank you very much for giving us the opportunity to do this interview for La Magia Absalón. How did this interest in music come about?
Sven: I have you to thank. My brother showed me the way to heavy metal back then. He still lived in our parents' house at that time and listened to music loudly all day, even to fall asleep. Of course, you got a relation to Heavy Metal through that. I had my first contact with Iron Maiden, Kiss and Manowar, and to me they all looked like felons (laughs). Until today I have remained faithful to Heavy Metal and it will certainly not change. At some point I started playing the drums and much later I continued with the guitar. And now I've come to a point where you also take care of other matters of music, production, business and so on.
LMA: I understand that Biwo was starting to form as a band, but these plans changed due to the pandemic, could you tell us a bit about it?
Sven: It wasn't easy, that's true. Justus and I met at a benefit concert, and he brought Hanno into the band. Unfortunately, the pandemic came, and everything was stopped for the time being. But I used the free time at home to write and record the album, because I really wanted to release it. Our time is unfortunately very limited on this planet, and I just didn't want to lose any more time. We are all not getting any younger. But despite all this, we have found together and play together several times a week. It harmonizes very well and I'm glad to have found the guys.
LMA: "Life and death" is the title of your debut album. Musically, it has a very characteristic style of the 80's, but with a modern and fresh touch. Who are those bands or artists that were a source of inspiration in the composition of the album?
Sven: Iron Maiden, Manowar, Majesty, Helloween, Running Wild, Grave Digger, Iced Earth and so on. The list could be endless! All these great bands play awesome heavy metal in their own way. We have also developed our own style and I am curious how the next songs will sound. In the end, the ideas for the songs came about while jamming. I don't pursue the goal of sounding like another band. Everything that happens comes from the heart.
LMA: One aspect that is to be admired is that the process of writing and recording the album was done by you. What challenges did carrying out all the tasks in the recording studio imply for you as a musician?
Sven: I think that today you have to be more than just a guitarist or a singer to be successful. Of course you can outsource certain things to other people but I prefer to do things myself. For a mix engineer it's just a job he has to do, for me it's a passion to work on my music. If I find someone who is as passionate about the music as I am, then I will hand off tasks. But it really allowed me to learn a lot, and that's the most important thing in life for you personally. It's important to have a clue about everything so no one can screw me over.
LMA: In other interviews, you have expressed that on a lyrical level, the songs that make up "Life and death" come from personal experiences. Did the pandemic influence the album writing process?
Sven: Not really, only the song "Win This Fight" came out of it. But you can also see it globally for every fight you have with yourself. I was not afraid of the pandemic or Corona either. Therefore, the pandemic did not really shock me. There are enough other diseases that are also very bad. And in the end it doesn't matter if I die of covid, cancer or whatever.
LMA: One aspect of the album that I find interesting is its cover art. Could you tell us a little about what it means?
Sven: It reflects life. Mother Earth symbolically gives life and takes it back. We are all part of the cycle of life on this planet. I just love it. I would like to see us stop robbing the earth as we are doing now and start valuing it again, taking only what we really need. Even with Iron Maiden the topic is present again and again.
LMA: Finley, Justus and Hanno joined Biwo, perhaps going from a solo project to a band. Are there any plans to compose an album fusing their creative ideas?
Sven: Currently we are still working on the songs from the album for our first live gigs. We also have some new song ideas but nothing concrete yet.
LMA: What are Biwo's plans for the future?
Sven: We will look to finally get on stage and continue to build our fanbase. I would love to play in Mexico and South America in general. I don't know anyone who goes crazy live like the South Americans. But we look from day to day. It makes no sense to dream big and not work on it piece by piece. We look to get a little better every day.
