VOID INN: END THIS GAME (REVIEW)

Void Inn es una banda de metal alternativo que se abre camino en la escena musical. Este cuarteto fundado originalmente en Los Ángeles, California en 2010 por Jelena Vujanovic (voz) y Sinisa Pejovic (guitarra) mientras estudiaban en el prestigioso Musicians Institute de Hollywood y que actualmente tiene su sede en Belgrado, Serbia, presenta su último álbum "End This Game "que fue lanzado el 30 de octubre. La grabación fue dirigida por Dragan Petronic Gaga y la portada fue realizada por Marijana Rakicevic.

Los riffs de la guitarra nos introducen a la primera canción de este álbum que es “Stay Young” y en la que destaca la poderosa voz de Jelena Vujanovic. Es una canción bastante rítmica que presenta diferentes matices sonoros yendo desde un sonido más melódico que contrasta con las notas agudas de su vocalista hasta un ritmo mas acelerado donde la guitarra adquiere mayor protagonismo. La parte intermedia a final de la canción presenta un solo de guitarra bien ejecutado y una faceta más extrema en la interpretación vocal muy cercana a los guturales.



Continuando con esta agresividad musical que nos presenta la banda, “Dead Of Night” es una canción que alterna las voces limpias y guturales de Jelena Vujanovic en el estribillo y que contrasta con las notas de la guitarra y la batería creando una ambientación interesante y que le agrega mayor variedad a este álbum. A medida que avanza la canción, encontramos un sonido más melódico que se distingue por el solo de guitarra cortesía de Sinisa Pejovic.

“End This Game” muestra una faceta más moderna y comercial por parte de la banda. En esta canción destaca la ejecución de la guitarra al presentar una serie de riffs muy característicos que engancharán al oyente desde los primeros segundos. La interpretación vocal se acopla bien a la instrumentación de la canción y denota esa influencia del rock de la década de los 90’s y principios del 2000. Los acordes del bajo por parte de Marko Djoric hacen acto de presencia al término de la canción.

“Just Another Day” es una de esas canciones que definitivamente tienen que ser escuchadas pues da muestra de la versatilidad musical de Void Inn. En el primer minuto, da la impresión de ser una balada por la serie de acordes melódicos llevados a través de las notas de la guitarra y el bajo, no obstante, la entrada de Marko Mrcarica en la batería rompe de forma abrupta con este sonido y se torna más salvaje, Jelena Vujanovic realiza un gran trabajo en la ejecución vocal pues transmita entre tonos graves y agudos jugando un poco con los guturales, en los últimos minutos de esta canción se presenta otra variante de sonido que muestra una influencia del rock clásico.

Anticipándonos a la parte final de este álbum, “Show Me What You Got” retorna a ese sonido agresivo que el cuarteto serbio nos presentó al comienzo de este álbum. Los riffs de la guitarra al principio de la canción son brutales y que se acentúan gracias a las notas del bajo, se disminuye un poco el ritmo de la canción para dar entrada a la interpretación vocal añadiéndole una ambientación más oscura y que denota esa influencia de la escena musical en Los Ángeles que les ha valido el reconocimiento a nivel mundial.

La última canción es “Hello Misery” que comienza de forma espectacular mediante la fuerza en el doble bombo de la batería, además de los acordes de la guitarra y el bajo. El riff de la guitarra que se presenta a lo largo de la canción es rítmico enganchándose en tu cabeza. En la parte vocal se imprime esa pasión y virtuosismo por parte de Jelena Vujanovic. Es una canción que fácilmente me imagino dentro de las presentaciones en vivo de la banda cuando este tipo de eventos se reestablezcan a causa de la pandemia.

End This Game es un álbum que definitivamente tienes que escuchar en esta eterna cuarentena. Void Inn es una banda versátil en el sentido más amplio de la palabra. La formación musical de sus integrantes, así como la influencia recibida tanto de la escena americana como europea crean una propuesta que se aleja de lo previamente establecido. Estoy interesada por seguir el trayecto musical de este cuarteto serbio pues le augura un buen futuro dentro de la escena.

Void Inn is an alternative metal band that is making its way onto the music scene. This quartet originally founded in Los Angeles, California in 2010 by Jelena Vujanovic (vocals) and Sinisa Pejovic (guitar) while were studying at the prestigious Musicians Institute in Hollywood and which is currently based in Belgrade, Serbia are presenting their latest album "End This Game" that was released in October 30th. The recording was directed by Dragan Petronic Gaga and the cover was done by Marijana Rakicevic.

The guitar riffs introduce us to the first song on this album which is "Stay Young" and in which the powerful voice of Jelena Vujanovic stands out. It is a rhythmic song that presents different sonic nuances, ranging from a more melodic sound that contrasts with the high notes of their vocalist to a more accelerated rhythm where the guitar takes on greater prominence. The middle part at the end of the song presents a well-executed guitar solo and a more extreme facet in the vocal interpretation very close to the gutturals.



Continuing with this musical aggressiveness that the band presents us, “Dead Of Night” is a song that alternates the clean and guttural voices of Jelena Vujanovic in the chorus and it contrasts with the notes of the guitar and drums creating an interesting atmosphere adding more variety to this album. As the song progresses, we find a more melodic sound distinguished by the guitar solo courtesy of Sinisa Pejovic.

"End This Game" shows a modern and commercial side on the part of the band. In this song, the execution of the guitar stands out by presenting a series of very characteristic riffs that will hook the listener from the first seconds. The vocal performance fits well with the instrumentation of the song and denotes that influence of rock from the 90's and early 2000's. Marko Djoric's bass chords make an appearance at the end of the song.

"Just Another Day" is one of those songs that must be heard as it shows the musical versatility of Void Inn. In the first minute, it gives the impression of being a ballad due to the series of melodic chords carried through the notes of the guitar and the bass, however, the entry of Marko Mrcarica on the drums abruptly breaks with this sound and becomes wilder, Jelena Vujanovic does a great job in vocal performance as she transmits between low and high tones playing a little with guttural voices, in the last minutes of this song another variant of sound is presented that shows an influence of classic rock.

In anticipation of the final part of this album, “Show Me What You Got” returns to that aggressive sound that the Serbian quartet presented us at the beginning of this album. The guitar riffs at the beginning of the song are brutal and those are accentuated thanks to the bass notes, the rhythm of the song is decreased a bit to give input to the vocal performance adding a darker atmosphere and that denotes the influence of the music scene in Los Angeles that has earned them worldwide recognition.

The last song is “Hello Misery” which begins in a spectacular way with the force in the double kick of the drums, in addition to the chords of the guitar and the bass. The guitar riff that runs throughout the song is rhythmic hooking into your head. In the vocal part that passion and virtuosity on the part of Jelena Vujanovic is printed. It is a song that I can easily imagine within the band's live performances when these types of events are re-established due to the pandemic.

End This Game is an album that you must listen to in this eternal quarantine. Void Inn is a versatile band in the broadest sense of the word. The musical training of their members, as well as the influence received from the American and European music scene, create a music proposal that departs from what was previously established. I am interested in following the musical journey of this Serbian quartet as it augurs well for them on the scene.
