INTERVIEW: SONIC ADDICTIVE

Sonic Addictive es una banda de hybrid cinematic rock/metal band originaria de Francia. Este cuarteto recién presentó al mundo su EP debut “Welcome to Neon City”. La Magia Absalón tuvo la oportunidad de platicar con Julie Mathieu-Miconi (voces) y Florian Moll (guitarrista) acerca del concepto detrás su propuesta musical y el panorama de la escena musical en su país.


LMA: Muchas gracias por la oportunidad de entrevistarlos para La Magia Absalón. Sonic Addictive es una banda que recién comienza a trazar su camino en la escena musical, ¿Podrían comentarnos acerca de cómo nació la banda y sobre el proceso de composición y grabación de su EP debut?


Julie: El nacimiento de Sonic Addictive viene de Symphonic Island con Sylvain y yo. Para una canción, habíamos pedido Florian a participar en la guitarra a continuación, de esta colaboración que queríamos formar una banda. En 2020, Sonic Addictive nació.


Sobre la composición, Sylvain propone la base musical y luego cada uno es libre de hacer cambios. Una vez que las piezas están bien avanzadas, Sylvain procede con las orquestaciones, el diseño sonoro y el sintetizador. Para este EP y como para las siguientes canciones, todo se grabó de forma independiente, en casa. Después, Sylvain mezcló todo el EP.



LMA: "Welcome to Neon City" cuenta con una propuesta sonora que fusiona diferentes géneros musicales al que han denominado como hybrid metal. ¿Qué bandas o artistas influyeron en la definición de su propuesta musical?


Julie: Interesante pregunta. Nuestra música evolucionará, es obvio, pero manteniendo el sonido de Sonic Addictive que nos define. A través de un mapa retro, descubrimos el universo de Neon City, con sonidos de los 80. Para el próximo EP, que esperamos para el año que viene, vamos a cambiar de universo y será diferente, musical y visualmente.


Tenemos muchas inspiraciones musicales diversas, rock, metal, pop, clásica. Desde Within Temptation hasta Two Steps from Hell, pasando por la música clásica hasta Sia, por ejemplo. De todas estas influencias musicales, queremos hacer algo que se parezca a nosotros.


LMA: Un aspecto que llama mi atención sobre "Welcome to Neon City" es la forma en cómo la banda emula este ambiente citadino en lo visual y en lo musical permitiendo que el oyente forma parte de ella en cada una de las canciones ¿Hubo alguna intención de desarrollar su EP debut bajo está lógica?


Julie: Al principio, cuando lanzamos "Mirror of the Unreal", era obvio que necesitábamos una identidad visual y que teníamos que explorar todo lo que fuera posible para nosotros. A medida que las canciones avanzaban en el proceso de producción, queríamos llevar a los oyentes de viaje.


A través de las letras, también quería tratar temas serios que también forman parte de la vida cotidiana y que a veces olvidamos por comodidad.


Florian: Como diseñador principal del material visual de la banda, era importante para mí y para todos nosotros desarrollar un universo gráfico con la música. Siempre me ha gustado ver las portadas de los discos de los 80 y los 90 y a veces el vínculo con la música. Para mí es tan importante como lo que escuchas.


Desde el principio, intentamos desarrollar todo eso aparte de nuestra música.


LMA: ¿Cómo consideran (desde su particular punto de vista) que está la escena musical en Francia? Sabiendo de antemano que el número de bandas aumenta poco a poco y ello genera mayor competencia entre ellas.


Julie: Hace unos años, formaba parte de un grupo con el que era fácil dar conciertos en cualquier parte.


Tras un largo paréntesis para dedicarme profesionalmente a la ópera, me doy cuenta de que muchas cosas han cambiado. Desde el consumo de música hasta la programación de espectáculos... No tenemos suficiente perspectiva, a día de hoy, pero podemos darnos cuenta de que es difícil conseguir feedback por correo electrónico para organizar conciertos, una gira. Y también entiendo que los bookers o las asociaciones culturales deben recibir muchos correos electrónicos cada día, todos con las mismas expectativas.


También somos conscientes de que estamos empezando como Sonic Addictive, y que debemos ser pacientes. No sé si en Francia hay muchos grupos que ofrezcan el mismo estilo de música que nosotros, es una forma de diferenciarnos.



LMA: La banda actualmente se encuentra en proceso de producción de su álbum debut. ¿Cómo se siente la banda y que han aprendido en este proceso considerando que ya cuentan con un álbum de corta duración?


Julie: Nuestro próximo lanzamiento volverá a ser un EP. Habrá varios en este formato porque habrá un hilo conductor entre cada uno. No queremos hacer un álbum con demasiados estilos diferentes, a riesgo de perder al oyente y que no entienda el mensaje. Y por último, un álbum o un EP es lo mismo. Hay que empezar de cero, crear de nuevo y desnudarse. Encontrar el tono adecuado en la música y las palabras. Todo es muy gratificante. De nuestro primer EP aprendimos mucho sobre la gestión del tiempo y los pasos de grabación. Al querer lanzar una canción de vez en cuando, durante la mezcla final, nos dimos cuenta de que no había las mismas mezclas entre cada canción, así que nos llevó más tiempo. Pero no importa, sabemos que no reproduciremos esos errores y eso nos enseña muchas cosas, técnicamente también.


Florian: Todo lo hacemos nosotros mismos por el momento, así que sí, aprendemos paso a paso lo que hay que hacer y lo que no hay que hacer después. De todas las formas posibles, desde la mezcla hasta los diseños.


LMA: ¿Cómo se ve la banda en algunos años?


Julie: ¡¿Viejo?! Jaja Siempre en la creación y en la búsqueda de nuevos sonidos, nuevos temas fuertes a tratar.

INTERVIEW: SONIC ADDICTIVE



Sonic Addictive is a hybrid cinematic rock/metal band from France. This quartet recently presented to the world their debut EP "Welcome to Neon City". La Magia Absalon had the opportunity to talk with Julie Mathieu-Miconi (vocals) and Florian Moll (guitarist) about the concept behind their musical proposal and the panorama of the music scene in their country.


LMA: Thank you very much for the opportunity to interview you for La Magia Absalón. Sonic Addictive is a band that is just beginning to chart its path in the music scene, could you tell us about how the band was born and about the process of composing and recording your debut EP?


Julie: The birth of Sonic Addictive comes from Symphonic Island with Sylvain and me. For a song, we had asked Florian to take part in the guitar then of this collaboration we wanted to form a band. In 2020, Sonic Addictive was born.


About the composition, Sylvain proposes the musical basis and then everyone is free to make changes. Once the pieces are well advanced, Sylvain proceeds with the orchestrations, the sound design, and the synth. For this EP and as for the following songs, everything was recorded independently, at home. Then Sylvain mixed the whole EP.



LMA: "Welcome to Neon City" has a sound proposal that fuses different musical genres that you have called hybrid metal. What bands or artists influenced the definition of your musical proposal?


Julie: Interesting question. Our music will evolve, it's obvious, while keeping the sound of Sonic Addictive that defines us. Through a retro map, we discovered the universe of Neon City, with 80's sounds. For the next EP, which we hope for next year, we are going to change universe and it will be different, musically, visually.


We have many diverse musical inspirations, rock, metal, pop, classical. From Within Temptation to Two Steps from Hell, passing through classical music to Sia for example. From all these musical influences, we want to make something that resembles us.


LMA: An aspect that calls my attention about "Welcome to Neon City" is the way in which the band emulates this city environment visually and musically, allowing the listener to be part of it in each of the songs. Was there any intention to develop your debut EP under this logic?


Julie: At the very beginning, when we released "Mirror of the Unreal" it was obvious that we needed a visual identity and that we had to explore everything that was possible for us. As the songs progressed through the production process, we wanted to take listeners on a journey.


Through the lyrics, I also wanted to deal with serious subjects which are also part of everyday life and which we sometimes forget for comfort.


Florian: As the main designer for visual stuff in the band, it was important for me and for all of us to develop a graphic universe with the music. I always loved to watch the covers of the albums of the 80’s and 90s and the link with the music sometimes. For me it’s as important as what you listen.


From the beginning, we tried to develop all of that aside from our music.


LMA: How do you consider (from your point of view) the music scene in France? Knowing beforehand that the number of bands is increasing little by little and this generates more competition between them.


Julie: A few years ago, I was part of a group with which it was easy to play concerts anywhere.


After a long break to devote myself to my professional career in opera, I realize that many things have changed. From music consumption to show programming... We don't have enough perspective, to date, but we can realize that it is difficult to get email feedback to organize concerts, a tour. And I also understand that bookers or cultural associations must receive lots of emails every day, all with the same expectations.


We are aware, too, that we are starting out as Sonic Addictive, and that we must be patient. I don't know if in France there are many bands that offer the same style of music as us, it's a way for us to stand out.



LMA: The band is currently in the process of producing its debut album, how does the band feel and what have you learned in this process considering that you already have a short album?


Julie: So our next release will again be an EP. There will be several in this format because there will be a common thread between each one. We don't want to make an album with too many different styles, at the risk of losing the listener and not understanding the message. And finally, an album or an EP is the same thing. You have to start from scratch, create anew and get naked. Finding the right pitch in music and words. Everything is very rewarding. From our first EP we learned a lot about time management and recording steps. Having wanted to release a song from time to time, during the final mix, we realized that there were not the same mixes between each song, so it took more time for that. But it does not matter, we know that we will not reproduce those errors and that teaches us a lot of things, technically too.


Florian: Everything is self made by us for the moment, so yeah we learn step by step things to do and not to do later. In every ways possible, from the mix to the designs.


LMA: How does the band see themselves in a few years?


Julie: Old?! Haha Always in the creation and in the search for new sounds, new strong subjects to treat.
