REVIEW: TOUCHING INFINITY (SORROWS PATH)

Sorrows Path es una banda de Doom Metal formada a finales del 1993 en Grecia por Takis Drakopoulos (†) y Kostas Salomidis. Con un futuro prometedor, el destino decidió que no era el momento adecuado para comenzar a escribir su propia historia dentro de la escena y fue a principios de la década pasada cuando la banda retomó su actividad y comenzó a hacerse presente en diferentes eventos y comenzar con el proceso de composición y grabación de su álbum debut “The Rough Path of Nihilism” publicado en 2010.


En esta ocasión realizaremos un viaje a través del tiempo para reseñar su último álbum “Touching Infinity” publicado en 2017 vía Iron Shield Records producido por Vangelis Yalamas en Fragile Studio. El arte fue realizado por Nikos Marko (Rotting Christ) y tiene como invitado al guitarrista Thiago Oliveira (Warrel Dane). Actualmente, la banda está en proceso de composición para su siguiente álbum que se tiene previsto salga a principios de 2022.


“Intro to Infinity” se distingue por la influencia de la música clásica a través de los acordes de la guitarra acústica y de instrumentos de cuerda como los violines y el cello que nos traslada a tierras oscuras y sombrías. Acto seguido, se presenta “Fantasies Will Never Die” que retoma a la mitología como tema principal en la parte lírica, mientras que en lo musical se distingue por la fuerza y la agresividad en la ejecución de la guitarra y la batería. La interpretación vocal de Angelos Ioannidis le aporta mayor teatralidad la canción.



“Leneh” es la historia de una mujer que carga sobre sus hombros la decepción, la soledad y humillación. La canción comienza con los acordes de las guitarras y el bajo que se complementan con el golpeteo de la batería. La interpretación vocal denota seriedad y narra lo acontecido con el personaje principal siendo el estribillo la enseñanza que nos deja a los seres humanos.


“My Chosen God” juega con diferentes armonías musicales a lo largo de la canción que llamará la atención del oyente. Con un inicio que fusiona la oscuridad del doom metal con elementos melódicos, va disminuyendo su sonido para dar paso a la parte vocal que alcanza su punto más álgido en el estribillo, jugando un poco con las voces guturales denotando esa sensación de sentirse atrapado tratando de escaparse de las ataduras físicas y mentales que describe la parte lírica. La intervención de Kostas Salomidis, George Vichos y Thiago Oliveira en las guitarras en la parte final de la canción es espectacular.



“Metaphysical Song” es una canción que nos habla acerca de la fe. Los acordes de la guitarra que se presentan en los primeros segundos de la canción tienen cierta influencia del Black Metal aportándole ese ambiente de solemnidad. Esta atmósfera se rompe de forma abrupta dando paso a un sonido más salvaje y agresivo en el que Stavros Giannakos realiza un gran trabajo en el bajo. Angelos Ioannidis aprovecha sus cualidades vocales para generar ese vínculo entre la parte musical y lírica.


“The Subconscious” es una de mis canciones favoritas de este álbum. La interpretación vocal de Angelos Ioannidis te atrapará desde los primeros segundos por la rítmica que su voz aporta a la parte musical caracterizada por el sonido de las guitarras y el bajo. La canción habla de cómo las voces que existen en nuestro interior pueden transformarnos para bien o para mal, y es este concepto el que permite a su cantante jugar con diferentes rangos vocales.


“Beauty” es quizás una de las canciones más emocionales que se presentan en este álbum, ya que nos habla sobre el vínculo entre la belleza y la fertilidad desde un punto de vista mitológico. Musicalmente, se destaca por la ejecución de las guitarras a un nivel más técnico, así como la presencia de voces femeninas y sonidos que le aportan un aire oriental a la canción. La interpretación vocal es espectacular.


"Forgiveness" nos envuelve en un ambiente de oscuridad producto del odio y el rencor que sentimos cuando hemos sido traicionados por las personas que amamos. El estribillo nos plantea una especie de enseñanza para comenzar a creer en nosotros mismos y en los demás. En términos instrumentales, podemos apreciar el sonido del Doom Metal en su mejor expresión.


"Revival of Femenine Grandeur" muestra un sonido más cercano al heavy metal que atrapará la atención del oyente desde los primeros segundos. Es interesante como este sonido se rompe con la introducción de las notas del piano que se complementa con la voz de Angelos Ioannidis en tonos extremadamente graves y un solo de guitarra que te volará la cabeza. La canción retoma esa parte rítmica y heavy que encontramos al inicio.



"Toucinhg Infinity" es la canción final de este álbum. Guiado por las suaves y delicadas notas del piano y del órgano, genera ese ambiente de solemnidad y respeto hacia las deidades de la mitología griega.


Es interesante como Sorrows Path combina el folklore griego con el heavy/doom metal creando una propuesta musical que le distingue de otras bandas de su género. La presencia de pasajes oscuros y melódicos rinden tributo a sus orígenes tomando a la mitología como tema principal cuyas letras evocan a la interpretación y a la reflexión. Es quizás, uno de los trabajos más completos de este quinteto griego y me mantiene a la expectativa de lo que nos presentará la banda en los próximos años.

Sorrows Path is a Doom Metal band formed in late 1993 in Greece by Takis Drakopoulos (†) and Kostas Salomidis. With a promising future, fate decided that it was not the right time to start writing their own history within the scene and it was at the beginning of the last decade when the band resumed their activity and began to be present at different events and start with the composition and recording process of their debut album "The Rough Path of Nihilism" released in 2010.


This time we will travel through time to review their latest album "Touching Infinity" released in 2017 via Iron Shield Records produced by Vangelis Yalamas at Fragile Studio. The artwork was made by Nikos Marko (Rotting Christ) and has as a guest the guitarist Thiago Oliveira (Warrel Dane). The band is currently in the writing process for their next album which is slated for release in early 2022.


"Intro to Infinity" is distinguished by the influence of classical music through the chords of the acoustic guitar and stringed instruments such as violins and cello that takes us to dark and gloomy lands. Immediately afterwards, “Fantasies Will Never Die” is presented, which takes up mythology as the main theme in the lyrical part, while in the musical it is distinguished by the strength and aggressiveness in the execution of the guitar and the drums. The vocal performance of Angelos Ioannidis gives the song more theatricality.



"Leneh" is the story of a woman who carries disappointment, loneliness and humiliation on her shoulders. The song begins with the chords of the guitars and bass that are complemented by the pounding of the drums. The vocal interpretation denotes seriousness and narrates what happened with the main character, the chorus being the teaching that it leaves us to human beings.


"My Chosen God" plays with different musical harmonies throughout the song that will catch the listener's attention. With a beginning that fuses the darkness of doom metal with melodic elements, it diminishes its sound to give way to the vocal part that reaches its highest point in the chorus, playing a little with the guttural voices denoting that feeling of feeling trapped trying to escape from the physical and mental ties that the lyrical part describes. The intervention of Kostas Salomidis, George Vichos and Thiago Oliveira on guitars in the final part of the song is spectacular.



"Metaphysical Song" is a song that tells us about faith. The guitar chords that are presented in the first seconds of the song have a certain influence of Black Metal giving it that atmosphere of solemnity. This atmosphere is abruptly broken giving way to a more wild and aggressive sound in which Stavros Giannakos does a great job on bass. Angelos Ioannidis takes advantage of his vocal qualities to generate that link between the musical and the lyrical part.


"The Subconscious" is one of my favourite songs on this album. Angelos Ioannidis' vocal performance will catch you from the first seconds due to the rhythm that his voice brings to the musical part characterized by the sound of guitars and bass. The song talks about how the voices that exist within us can transform us for better or for worse, and it is this concept that allows its singer to play with different vocal ranges.


"Beauty" is perhaps one of the most emotional songs featured on this album, as it tells us about the link between beauty and fertility from a mythological point of view. Musically, it stands out for the execution of the guitars at a more technical level, as well as the presence of female voices and sounds that give the song an oriental air. The vocal performance is spectacular.


"Forgiveness" envelops us in an atmosphere of darkness, a product of the hatred and resentment we feel when we have been betrayed by the people we love. The chorus offers us a kind of teaching to begin to believe in ourselves and in others. In instrumental terms, we can appreciate the sound of Doom Metal at its best.


"Revival of Femenine Grandeur" shows a sound closer to heavy metal that will catch the listener's attention from the first seconds. It is interesting how this sound is broken with the introduction of the piano notes that is complemented by the voice of Angelos Ioannidis in extremely low tones and a guitar solo that will blow your mind. The song takes up that rhythmic and heavy part that we found at the beginning.



"Toucinhg Infinity" is the final song on this album. Guided by the soft and delicate notes of the piano and the organ, he generates that atmosphere of solemnity and respect for the deities of Greek mythology.


It is interesting how Sorrows Path combines Greek folklore with heavy/doom metal creating a musical proposal that distinguishes it from other bands of its genre. The presence of dark and melodic passages pay tribute to their origins, taking mythology as the main theme whose lyrics evoke interpretation and reflection. It is perhaps one of the most complete works of this Greek quintet and it keeps me waiting for what the band will present to us in the coming years.
