INTERVIEW: HELLPASS

Hellpass es una banda de heavy metal originaria de Thessaloniki, Grecia. Integrada por Vasilis en las voces, Aggelos en la guitarra y Alexander en la batería, este trío recién presentó al mundo su álbum debut “Gates of War”. La Magia Absalón tuvo la oportunidad de platicar con Alexander acerca de sus orígenes como banda, la definición de su propuesta musical y sobre el futuro.


LMA: Muchas gracias por aceptar esta entrevista para La Magia Absalón, Hellpass es una banda de reciente creación y que apenas está abriéndose camino en la escena, ¿cómo surgió la idea de formar la banda?


Alexander: ¡Hola! En primer lugar, permítanme presentarme a mí y a la banda. Somos Hellpass, una banda de Heavy/Thrash Metal de Thessaloniki Grecia. Mi nombre es Alexander, soy el baterista de Hellpass y represento a HellPass como su portavoz. Nos sentimos honrados de recibir una entrevista suya y nos gustaría agradecerle esta oportunidad que nos ha brindado, ¡permitiendo así que una audiencia más amplia nos conozca mejor!


La música siempre fue un amor para mí, así que comencé a tocar y componer desde una edad temprana y me involucré con muchos músicos y bandas no solo en la escena del metal sino en un sentido más amplio. Pero la agresividad del sonido pesado y la energía que fluye de él me atrajeron desde una edad temprana. ¡Me picó el gusanillo del heavy metal!


El elemento que nos unió a Aggelos y a mí es nuestro amor por la música heavy y el ardiente deseo de involucrarnos en ella profesionalmente. Nos conocimos por primera vez a través de un anuncio en línea. Aggelos estaba tocando en una banda de heavy metal en ese momento y necesitaban un baterista, así que llamé y reservé una audición. Después de nuestro primer jam yo era el baterista oficial de esa banda. Cuando este proyecto se disolvió, los dos comenzamos Hellpass. Poco después, Vasilis se unió a la banda. Comenzamos como un trío y en un par de meses habíamos compuesto nuestro álbum debut, "Gates of War", en su totalidad y a fines del verano del ‘22 ingresamos al estudio de grabación. Mientras tanto, estábamos buscando un bajista para que Vasilis pudiera concentrarse más en la voz. A principios del otoño de 2022, Nick ingresó a la banda y comenzó a aprender canciones y a ensayar de inmediato.


Nuestro amor por la música heavy y la necesidad de actuar en vivo en todo el mundo es lo que mantiene unido a Hellpass hasta el día de hoy. De ese amor nació “Gates of War”, nuestro álbum debut.



LMA: Los integrantes de la banda (Vasilis en las voces, Aggelos en la guitarra y Alexander en la batería) cuentan con experiencia previa en otras bandas, ¿cómo contribuyó la trayectoria musical de sus integrantes en la composición de “Gates of War” así como en definir la propuesta musical de la banda?


Alexander: En “Gates of War” Aggelos, nuestro guitarrista, es el compositor principal. Entonces, básicamente, Aggelos ideó todas las partes de los instrumentos de cuerda, las trajo a la sala de ensayo y luego tocamos sin parar todos juntos hasta que estuvimos satisfechos con el producto final. Una vez que la parte musical había alcanzado su forma final, Vasilis, nuestro cantante escribió todas las letras y se le ocurrieron las partes vocales.


Somos una banda en constante crecimiento; cada miembro lleva sus propias influencias y el producto final es una mezcla de todas las personalidades que están involucradas en el proceso de composición.


LMA: “Gates of War” es el nombre de su álbum debut que recupera la esencia del heavy metal fusionado con otros géneros como el melódico, el doom y hasta el thrash. ¿Cuáles son las influencias musicales que fueron parte importante en la definición del estilo musical de la banda?


Alexander: Hellpass es una banda de heavy metal con influencias de thrash y doom. Como la lista de nuestras influencias es demasiado larga, les daré solo tres nombres: Candlemass, Megadeth y Mötley Crüe.


LMA: Un aspecto que me pareció interesante de su álbum debut y que puede apreciarse dentro de las canciones es la presencia de elementos folclóricos propios de la cultura nórdica, en específico, de los vikingos, ¿de dónde surgió ese interés por fusionar el folk con su propuesta basada en el heavy metal?


Alexander: Este interés proviene de Manowar, Bathory, Amon Amarth y todas las bandas épicas/paganas que existieron y continúan existiendo hasta el día de hoy en la música metal. Nosotros también somos fans de este tipo de metal. Por el tema de la letra nórdica de nuestra canción “Oath to the Metal Gods” (que es la canción a la que entiendo te refieres) debemos agradecer, especialmente, a Vasilis, nuestro frontman ya que escribió todas las letras y trajo el concepto vikingo en la canción.


LMA: Su álbum debut se titula “Gates of War” en alusión a los acontecimientos mundiales de los últimos años. ¿Podemos encontrar algunas canciones que aborden situaciones sociales/políticas dentro del álbum?


Alexander: Correcto. En febrero de 2023 salió nuestro hijo del metal, por así decirlo, nuestro primogénito, “Gates of War”.

“Gates of War” es un álbum que habla sobre la guerra que aún continúa en Ucrania y las formas en que los gobiernos y los estados han ideado para dividir a la gente. Las canciones que abordan situaciones sociales/políticas dentro del álbum son la autotitulada "Gates of War", "Futura" una canción sobre la descomposición social de la sociedad moderna y "Burning Flags" la canción de cierre de nuestro álbum "Gates of War", que también se lanza como un video musical que se filmó en los estudios de ImageNation y está disponible en nuestro canal de YouTube.


“Burning Flags” es una canción de metal en llamas que quema todos los límites y une a las personas del mundo, así que Burn, Burn, Burn the flags!!!



LMA: Han transcurrido algunos meses de que se publicó su álbum debut, ¿cómo ha sido la recepción del álbum por parte de la prensa y los fanáticos?


Alexander: Recibimos comentarios positivos de fanáticos, revistas web, programas de radio, sellos discográficos y amigos de todo el mundo. Los fanzines se interesan por nosotros y nos entrevistan constantemente. Los fanáticos compran nuestra mercancía, escuchan nuestra música en spotify, YouTube y otros sitios (todo lo que necesitan es Hellink https://linktr.ee/hellpass) y apoyan nuestros shows en vivo. Los programas de radio presentan nuestra música y también nos entrevistan.


Parece que “Gates of War” es bien recibido y nuestra música cumple el objetivo de inspirar al oyente.

LMA: ¿Han tenido la oportunidad de presentarse en vivo para mostrar al mundo su propuesta musical? ¿Cómo ha sido su experiencia?


Alexander: Desde febrero, Hellpass ha comenzado a actuar en vivo. Ya hemos tocado en escenarios conocidos de las ciudades más grandes de Grecia. Actualmente estamos de gira, difundiendo "Gates of War", nuestro álbum debut, en toda Grecia y más allá.


Nos ofrecieron una plaza en el festival Over the Wall que hemos aceptado con honor. ¡Vamos a tocar allí, en la isla de Creta, el 26 de agosto de 2023 como teloneros de los veteranos del heavy metal Virgin Steele!


El evento que más nos emociona es nuestra gira europea con los berserkers de black metal Arallu, con nuestros hermanos de death metal de Atenas Among Ruins y nuestros vecinos de death metal Gravestone del 11 al 19 de noviembre de 2023.


LMA: Para finalizar nuestra entrevista, ¿cuáles son los planes a futuro para Hellpass?


Alexander: Como hemos mencionado anteriormente, hemos reservado muchos espectáculos para este año. Esperamos ver a cada uno de ustedes en al menos uno. A continuación, siguen las fechas restantes para el año 2023.

INTERVIEW: HELLPASS



Hellpass is a heavy metal band from Thessaloniki, Greece. Made up of Vasilis on vocals, Aggelos on guitar and Alexander on drums, this trio has just presented their debut album “Gates of War” to the world. La Magia Absalón had the opportunity to talk with Alexander about his origins as a band, the definition of his musical proposal and about the future.


LMA: Thank you very much for accepting this interview for La Magia Absalón, Hellpass is a recently created band that is just making its way into the scene, how did the idea of forming the band come about?


Alexander: Hello there! First of all let me introduce myself and the band. We are Hellpass, a Heavy/Thrash Metal band from Thessaloniki Greece. My name is Alexander, I am the drummer of Hellpass and I represent HellPass as their spokesman. We are honored to be hosted in an interview by you and we would like to thank you for this opportunity you have given us, thus letting a broader audience to get to know us better!


Music was always a love of mine, so I began playing and composing from an early age and got involved with many musicians and bands not only in the metal scene but in a broader sense. But the aggressiveness of the heavy sound and the energy that flows from it appealed to me from an early age. I was bitten by the heavy metal bug!


The element that brought Angelos and me together is our love for heavy music and the burning desire to get involved with it professionally. We first met through an online ad. Angelos was playing in a heavy metal band at the time and they needed a drummer, so I called and booked an audition. After our first jam I was the official drummer of that band. When this project disbanded the two of us started Hellpass. Shortly after, Vasilis joined the band. We started out as a three piece and within a couple of months we had composed our debut album, “Gates of War”, in its entirety and in the late summer of ‘22 we entered the recording studio. Meantime, we were searching for a bassist so Vasilis could focus more on vocals. In the early fall of 2022 Nick entered the band and started learning songs and rehearsing immediately.


Our love for heavy music and the need to perform live all around the globe is what keeps Hellpass together to this day. From that love “Gates of War”, our debut album, sprung forth.



LMA: The members of the band (Vasilis on vocals, Aggelos on guitar and Alexander on drums) have previous experience in other bands, how did the musical career of its members contribute to the composition of "Gates of War" as well as in define the musical proposal of the band?


Alexander: In “Gates of War” Aggelos, our guitarist, is the main composer. So, basically Aggelos came up with all the parts of the stringed instruments, brought them in the rehearsal room and then we jammed endlessly all together until we were satisfied with the end product. Once the musical part had reached its’ final form, Vasilis, our singer wrote all the lyrics and came up with the vocal parts.


We are an ever-growing band; every member carries his own influences, and the final product is a blend of all the personalities that are involved in the composition process.


LMA: “Gates of War” is the name of their debut album that recovers the essence of heavy metal fused with other genres such as melodic, doom and even thrash. What are the musical influences that were an important part in defining the musical style of the band?


Alexander: Hellpass is a heavy metal band with thrash and doom influences. Since the list of our influences is too long, I’ll give you just three names: Candlemass, Megadeth and Mötley Crüe.


LMA: One aspect of your debut album that I found interesting and that can be seen in the songs is the presence of folk elements typical of Nordic culture, specifically, of the Vikings. Where did this interest in fusing folk withheavy metal come from?


Alexander: This interest comes from Manowar, Bathory, Amon Amarth and all the epic/pagan bands that existed and continue to exist to this day in the metal music. We are fans of this type of metal, also. For the Nordic lyrical theme of our song “Oath to the Metal Gods” (which is the song that I understand you are referring to) we must thank, especially, Vasilis, our front man since he wrote all the lyrics and brought the Viking concept into the song.


LMA: Their debut album is titled “Gates of War” in reference to the world events of recent years. Can we find some songs that address social/political situations within the album?


Alexander: Correct. On February of 2023 our metal child, so to speak, our first born, “Gates of War” got out.

“Gates of War” is an album that speaks about the still going on war in Ukraine and the ways governments and states have devised to divide the people. Songs that address social/political situations within the album are the self titled “Gates of War”, “Futura” a song about the social decomposition of modern society and “Burning Flags” the closing song of our album “Gates of War”, which is also released as a Music Video which was shot in ImageNation studios and is available on our YouTube channel.


“Burning Flags” is a flaming metal song that burns out all the boundaries and unites the people of the world together, so Burn,Burn,Burn the flags!!!



LMA: A few months have passed since your debut album was released, how has the album been received by the press and fans?


Alexander: We got positive feedback from fans, webzines, radio shows, record labels and friends from around the world. Zines are interested in us and interview us constantly. Fans buy our merch, listen to our music on spotify, YouTube and other sites (all they need is the Hellink https://linktr.ee/hellpass) and support our live shows. Radio Shows host our music and interview us, too.


It seems that “Gates of War” is well received, and our music accomplishes the goal of inspiring the listener.


We are more than thankful and satisfied!


LMA: Have you had the opportunity to perform live to show the world your musical proposal? How has your experience been?


Alexander: Since February Hellpass has started performing live. We have already played on well known stages of the biggest cities in Greece. Anyone interested can check our live videos on our YouTube Channel(https://linktr.ee/hellpass)We are currently on tour, spreading “Gates of War” our debut album all over Greece and beyond.


We were offered a slot in Over the Wall festival that we have accepted with honour. We are going to play there, on the island of Crete, on the 26th of August 2023 as support for the veterans of heavy metal Virgin Steele!


The event that we are mostly excited about is our European tour with the black metal berserkers Arallu, with our death metal brothers from Athens Among Ruins and our death metal neighbours Gravestone from 11 until 19 of November of 2023.


LMA: To end our interview, what are the future plans for Hellpass?


Alexander: As we have mentioned above, we have booked many shows for this year. We hope to see every one of you in at least one. Below follows the remaining dates for the year 2023.
