Si existiera una palabra que defina a Desperation Blvd es la amistad. Este trío italiano combina la experiencia en el negocio de la música del guitarrista Alex 'Crown' Corona, el baterista Elvis 'Hell' Ortolan y el bajista Matteo 'Matt' Marinelli para crear una banda que rindiera tributo a sus principales influencias musicales de la época del hard rock de la década de los 80's pero con un estilo propio.
Su álbum homónimo es producido por Michele Guaitoli (Visions of Atlantis) y reúne a varias amistades de la banda como David Reece (Accept), Fabio D'Amore (Serenity) y Alessia Scolletti (Temperance) solo por mencionar algunos, que será publicado el 6 de diciembre.
Desperation Blvd se distingue por melodías que rescatan el estilo musical del hard rock de la década de los 80's con un enfoque más actual y que aprovecha las cualidades vocales de sus invitados para crear canciones dinámicas y entretenidas, con coros pegadizos y melodías rítmicas que te harán viajar por el tiempo y olvidarte de la cuarentena.
Su baterista Alex' Hell' Ortolan platicó con La Magia Absalon acerca de la banda, su álbum debut y los planes a futuro.
La Magia Absalon: Muchas gracias por esta entrevista para La Magia Absalon. Desperation Blvd es un proyecto que presenta un estilo musical cercano a Sleaze / Hard Rock e inmediatamente evoca el sonido de otras bandas como Guns n 'Roses, Pretty Boy Floyd, Dangerous Toys, entre otras. ¿Cómo nació este proyecto?
Elvis “Hell” Ortolan: ¡Gracias por la oportunidad! Bueno, este proyecto nació después de la separación de nuestra banda anterior llamada Roxin’Palace. El guitarrista Alex y yo estábamos un poco cansados de dirigir una banda sin la ayuda de otros compañeros, pero, al mismo tiempo, queríamos seguir con la música, así que decidimos escribir, producir y grabar un nuevo EP, con la ayuda de amigos e invitados especiales en las voces.
La Magia Absalon: Alex Corona, Elvis Ortolan y Mateo Martinelli son músicos con cierta experiencia en el panorama musical. ¿Se pensó en Desperation Blvd como un proyecto a realizar en paralelo con sus otras bandas?
Elvis “Hell” Ortolan: ¡Sí, por supuesto! Para mí y para Alex, Desperation Blvd. es el proyecto principal en este momento, porque es el estilo musical que amamos y queremos tocar, pero al mismo tiempo queremos desarrollar nuestra creatividad en diferentes situaciones.
La Magia Absalon: ¿Crees que el trabajo que has hecho en tus otras bandas ha influido en la determinación del sonido de Desperation Blvd?
Elvis "Hell" Ortolan: ¡Por supuesto! Crecimos a finales de los 80 y principios de los 90, escuchando a las grandes bandas, sin un estilo en particular, desde Iron Maiden a Metallica, desde Queensryche a Motley Crue, etc. Cada influencia es útil para encontrar nuestro camino.
La Magia Absalon: En diciembre presentarán su EP homónimo que contará con seis canciones. ¿Podrías contarnos cómo va el proceso de escritura y grabación de este EP?
Elvis “Hell” Ortolan: Como te dije antes, Alex y yo hemos escrito este montón de canciones, sin prisa, solo hacemos música.
Las grabaciones también se llevaron a cabo en múltiples sesiones, con nuestro querido amigo Michele Guaitoli (cantante de Temperance and Visions Of Atlantis). La idea básica de este EP, es la promoción, una especie de “Business Card”, para generar interés en sellos, directivos y músicos.
La Magia Absalon: También se incluye en este EP una versión de “Hold Back The Rain” de Duran Duran. ¿Hubo alguna razón específica para que se contemplara en este EP?
Elvis “Hell” Ortolan: Primero que nada, somos fans de Duran Duran (¡somos chicos de los 80!), Luego, después de verlos en vivo, nos atrapó el ánimo de esta canción, un poco dance, pero también rock, con un gran coro. Pensamos que habría sido un buen experimento para nosotros.
La Magia Absalon: Este disco contará con la presencia de diferentes invitados como David Reece (ex-Accept), Thomas Silver (Hardcore Superstar), Fabio D'Amore (Serenity) y Alessia Scolletti (Temperance) por nombrar algunos. ¿Podría contarnos un poco al respecto y si hubo alguna dificultad por problemas de distancia y confinamiento debido a la pandemia?
Elvis "Hell" Ortolan: La idea de los invitados especiales surgió porque no teníamos un cantante oficial. Pensamos que sería interesante tener seis cantantes con diferentes estilos y antecedentes y dejarlos cantar como lo hacen habitualmente. No hubo dificultad para trabajar. Alessia, Fabio, Claudio y Mattia son amigos queridos, viven cerca de nosotros, para el resto trabajamos de forma remota con archivos. El álbum se terminó justo antes de la pandemia y el bloqueo, de hecho, queríamos lanzar la banda durante la primavera de 2020, pero ya sabes lo que sucedió...
La Magia Absalon: “November Pain” es el primer sencillo que presenta la banda con la participación de Mattia Martin (Bad As) en la voz. Es una canción bastante rítmica cuyo sonido evoca el espíritu rockero de los 80. ¿Podrías contarnos sobre esta canción y por qué se decidió que sea el primer sencillo promocional?
Elvis “Hell” Ortolan: Para nosotros, November Pain representa el estilo y el estado de ánimo de la banda, por eso, lo elegimos como primer sencillo. Es un ritmo acelerado, con un estribillo pegadizo, Alex lo escribió pensando en cosas como Garden of Eden de Guns N’ Roses, y habla de una enfermedad interminable (dos años antes de COVID).
La Magia Absalon: ¿Cuáles son los planes a futuro de la banda?
Elvis "Hell" Ortolan: Como saben, en este momento no podemos tocar en vivo, así que intentaremos dedicar este tiempo a escribir el nuevo álbum completo, ¡ya tenemos muchas ideas! Mientras tanto, lo estamos haciendo. Haremos una promoción masiva para este episodio.

INTERVIEW WITH ELVIS "HELL" ORTOLAN (DESPERATION BLVD)
If there is one word that defines Desperation Blvd, it is friendship. This Italian trio combines the music business experience of guitarist Alex 'Crown' Corona, drummer Elvis 'Hell' Ortolan and bassist Matteo 'Matt' Marinelli to create a band that would pay tribute to their major musical influences of hard rock from the 80's but with their own style.
Their self-titled album is produced by Michele Guaitoli (Visions of Atlantis) and brings together several friends of the band such as David Reece (Accept), Fabio D'Amore (Serenity) and Alessia Scolletti (Temperance) just to name a few, being released on December 6th, 2020.
Desperation Blvd is distinguished by melodies that rescue the musical style of hard rock from the 80's with a more current approach and that takes advantage of the vocal qualities of their guests to create dynamic and entertaining songs, with catchy choruses and rhythmic melodies that will make you travel through time and forget about quarantine.
Their drummer Alex 'Hell' Ortolan spoke with La Magia Absalon about the band, their debut album and their future plans.
La Magia Absalon: Thank you very much for this interview for La Magia Absalon. Desperation Blvd is a project that presents a music style close to Sleaze / Hard Rock and immediately evokes the sound of other bands such as Guns n 'Roses, Pretty Boy Floyd, Dangerous Toys, among others. How was this project born?
Elvis “Hell” Ortolan: Thanks to you for opportunity! Well, this project was born after the split of our previous band called Roxin’Palace. Me and guitarist Alex were a bit tired to manage a band without any help of other bandmates but, at the same time we wanted to carry on with music, so, we decided to write, produce and record a new ep, with some help of friends and special guests on vocals.
La Magia Absalon: Alex Corona, Elvis Ortolan and Mateo Martinelli are musicians with some experience in the music scene. Was Desperation Blvd thought of as a project to be carried out in parallel with your other bands?
Elvis “Hell” Ortolan: Yes, of course! For me and Alex, Desperation BLVD is the main project at the moment, because is the music style we love and want to play, but at the same time we want to develop our creativity in different situations.
La Magia Absalon: Do you think that the work you have done in your other bands has been an influence in determining the sound of Desperation Blvd?
Elvis “Hell” Ortolan: Absolutely! We grew up in late 80’s and early 90’s, listening to the great bands, not a particular style, From Iron Maiden to Metallica, from Queensryche to Motley Crue, etc. Every influence is helpful to find our way.
La Magia Absalon: In December you will present your self-titled EP that will feature six songs. Could you tell us about how the process of writing and recording this EP is going?
Elvis “Hell” Ortolan: As I told you before, Me and Alex, have written this bunch of songs, with no hurry, just make music.
Recordings also took place in multiple sessions, with our dear friend Michele Guaitoli (singer of Temperance and Visions OF Atlantis). The basic idea for this ep, is for promotion, a kind of “Business Card”, to create interest for labels, managements and musicians.
La Magia Absalon: Also included in this EP is a version of “Hold Back the Rain” by Duran Duran. Was there a specific reason for it to be contemplated in this EP?
Elvis “Hell” Ortolan: First of all, we are fans of Duran Duran (we are 80’s boys!),then, after seeing them live, we were caught by the mood of this song, a bit dance but also rock, with a great chorus. We thought it would have been a good experiment for us.
La Magia Absalon: This album will feature the presence of different guests such as David Reece (ex-Accept), Thomas Silver (Hardcore Superstar), Fabio D'Amore (Serenity) and Alessia Scolletti (Temperance) to name a few. Could you tell us a little about it and if there were any difficulties due to distance and confinement issues due to the pandemic?
Elvis “Hell” Ortolan: The idea of special guests came up because we didn’t have an official singer. We thought it would be interesting to have six singers with different style and background and let them sing as they usually do. There were no difficult to work. Alessia, Fabio, Claudio and Mattia are dear friends, they live close to us, for the rest we worked remotely with files. The album was finished just before the pandemic and lockdown, indeed, we wanted to launch the band during spring 2020 but you know what happened…
La Magia Absalon: “November Pain” is the first single that the band presented with the participation of Mattia Martin (Bad As) on vocals. It's a pretty rhythmic song whose sound evokes the rock spirit of the 80's. Could you tell us about this song and why it was decided to be the first promotional single?
Elvis “Hell” Ortolan: For us, November Pain represents the style and the mood of the band, for this reason we chose it as first single. It’s an up tempo, with catchy chorus, Alex wrote it thinking about stuff like Garden of Eden by Guns’n’Roses, and talks about a neverending disease (Two years before COVID)
La Magia Absalon: What are the future plans for the band?
Elvis “Hell” Ortolan: As you know, at the moment we can’t play live, so, we’ll try to spend this time to write the new full-length album, we already have a lot of ideas! In the meantime, we are doing- we’ll do a massive promotion for this ep.
La Magia Absalon: I thank you for the opportunity to give us this interview, some final words for our audience in Mexico and Latin America?
