Hand of Kalliach es un dúo conformado por John (voces, guitarra y batería) y Sophie (voces y bajo). Su sonido presenta matices escoceses, gaélicos y celtas que se fusionan con el Death Metal Melódico y en el que se perciben algunas influencias de Folk Metal. Shade Beyond es su EP debut publicado a finales del año pasado. La Magia Absalón tuvo la oportunidad de conversar con la banda en la que nos platican de sus origenes, su proceso creativo y lo que podemos esperar en un future cercano.
LMA: Hand of Kalliach es una banda relativamente nueva que lanzó su EP debut Shade Beyond a finales del año pasado, teniendo una respuesta favorable de la prensa especializada, ¿cómo se siente la banda al respecto?
Sophie: Intentamos ser geniales, pero fracasamos aquí porque quedamos absolutamente anonadados por la recepción que está teniendo. Pensamos que era algo diferente, pero nunca se sabe cómo reaccionarán otras personas. ¡Ver cómo se reproduce en todo el mundo es increíble! Fuimos nombrados "Banda del Mes" en un programa de radio de metal del Reino Unido en enero después de su lanzamiento en diciembre, lo que nos dejó absolutamente sin palabras: el presentador se había topado con nosotros en Bandcamp, ¡pero estábamos seguros de que habían cometido un error ...!
John: Jaja, sí, estaría de acuerdo, realmente intentamos ser geniales al respecto, pero ha sido increíble ver la recepción y la gran cantidad de comentarios y reseñas realmente positivos que ya han llegado de radios, fanzines clandestinos y blogs. Cuando estábamos escribiendo el EP, era un proyecto un poco apasionante que realmente no esperábamos que tuviera ningún tipo de éxito, pero verlo en todo el mundo ha sido muy humillante, especialmente porque este es el tipo de música que hemos querido hacer durante mucho tiempo.
LMA: Shade Beyond presenta una propuesta musical alternativa y fresca que toma el folk metal como elemento principal, pero que se fusiona con elementos electrónicos y sinfónicos creando un disco muy dinámico, ¿cuáles son las influencias musicales de la banda que ayudaron en la consolidación de su propuesta musical?
John: Creo que tenemos gustos bastante amplios entre nosotros, cubriendo muchos subgéneros de metal y rock, pero también folk tradicional. En el lado del metal, soy un gran fanático del death metal técnico/melódico con un sesgo atmosférico, particularmente Fallujah. Fuera del metal, escucho una variedad realmente extraña de folk escocés y otros géneros muy diferentes.
Sophie: Me inclino más hacia el thrash y algunas variantes del power metal, aunque fuera del metal algunas de mis bandas favoritas están más en el espacio folk/indie. Creo que la amplitud de estilos en nuestra música probablemente refleja estas influencias bastante diversas.
John: Muchas de las melodías celtas se basan en las escalas y los ritmos que normalmente se encuentran en la música folclórica escocesa, pero en lugar de tocarlas con instrumentos tradicionales, las hemos adaptado para guitarras distorsionadas. La idea es que termines con la misma energía melódica y ritmo de la música tradicional, combinada con el poder crudo y la expresión que obtienes de una base de death metal.
LMA: ¿Podrían contarnos sobre el proceso creativo de Shade Beyond?
Sophie: Toda la pista se grabó en casa durante el encierro en Escocia durante 2020, probablemente pasamos cuatro meses en ella de principio a fin, pero gran parte de ese tiempo fue mezcla y masterización; el proceso de escritura real tomó solo unos días para algunas de las pistas.
John: Por lo general, comenzamos con una melodía central, nuevamente extraída del folk tradicional escocés, y la construimos a partir de ahí con las guitarras. Luego, Sophie agregará una línea de bajo, yo agregaré algunos tambores y trabajaremos juntos en las voces. Yo diría que ha sido una experiencia muy diferente escribir solo con nosotros dos en lugar de como una banda completa, podemos pasar mucho más rápido de la idea a una pista completa.
Sophie: Sí, podemos comenzar con melodías o estructuras iniciales durante el desayuno y grabar una estructura de canción aproximada por la noche si nos sentimos productivos. Es una forma bastante interesante de hacerlo.
LMA: Cinders es su canción más reciente que muestra un sonido más agresivo y que continúa con esta propuesta musical desarrollada en su álbum debut. ¿Cuáles han sido las reacciones a esta canción por parte de sus fans y la prensa especializada?
John: Con Cinders, queríamos tomar los mejores elementos que la gente amaba y sobre los que nos retroalimentaban de Shade Beyond y comprimir todos esos elementos en una pista vertiginosa de tres minutos. Queríamos desafiarnos a nosotros mismos para ver si podíamos incluir blastbeats, riffs rápidos, solos, melodías y voces duales en una sola canción, y estamos realmente satisfechos con el resultado. De alguna manera, ya es nuestra canción más guardada en Spotify y solo salió a mediados de marzo.
Sophie: Nunca hemos pasado tanto tiempo haciendo bien una pista, pero como dice John, estamos muy contentos con cómo salió. Ha tenido una gran recepción desde su lanzamiento, con mucha reproducción en la radio, listas de reproducción de Spotify e incluso llegó al número 1 en las listas de éxitos "Hot or Not" de SubmitHub Hard Rock y Metal, ¡lo cual nos sorprendió absolutamente!
LMA: ¿Hay planes para lanzar un álbum de larga duración en el futuro?
Sophie: Sí, estamos absolutamente trabajando en otro lanzamiento, esperamos que esté listo antes de que termine el verano.
John: Estamos enormemente motivados por la respuesta al EP y al single reciente para seguir escribiendo y ver dónde podemos llevar el sonido. Shade Beyond fue casi completamente un trabajo de bricolaje de principio a fin, por lo que estamos realmente emocionados de trabajar ya con un ingeniero consumado en la escena metal en el Reino Unido para los próximos lanzamientos.

INTERVIEW: HAND OF KALLIACH
Hand of Kalliach is a duo made up of John (vocals, guitar and drums) and Sophie (vocals and bass). Their sound has Scottish, Gaelic and Celtic nuances that merge with Melodic Death Metal and in which some Folk Metal influences are perceived. Shade Beyond is their debut EP released late last year. La Magia Absalón had the opportunity to talk with the band in which they told us about their origins, their creative process and what we can expect in the near future.
LMA: Hand of Kalliach is a relatively new band that released their debut EP Shade Beyond at the end of last year, having a favorable response from the specialized press, how does the band feel about it?
Sophie: We try and be cool but fail here because we were absolutely floored by the reception it’s getting! We thought it was something different but you never know how other people will react to it. Watching it being played around the world is unreal! We were made “Band of the Month” on a UK metal radio show in January after just launching in December which had us absolutely speechless - the host had stumbled onto us on Bandcamp, but we were sure they’d made a mistake..!
John: Haha, yeah, I would have to agree, we really try and be cool about it, but it’s been amazing seeing the reception and the slew of really positive feedback and reviews that have come in from radios, underground zines and blogs already. When we were writing the EP it was a bit of an “out-there” passion project that we were really not expecting would have any form of success, but seeing it getting played around the world has been really humbling, especially as this is the sort of music we’ve wanted to make for a long time.
LMA: Shade Beyond presents an alternative and fresh musical proposal that takes folk metal as a main element, but that fuses with electronic and symphonic elements creating a very dynamic album, what are the musical influences of the band that helped in the consolidation of your music proposal?
John: I think we have pretty broad tastes between us, covering a lot of metal and rock subgenres but also traditional folk. On the metal side, I’m a big fan of technical/melodic death metal with an atmospheric slant, particularly the likes of Fallujah. Outside of metal, I listen to a really weird range of Scottish folk and other very different genres.
Sophie: I lean more towards thrash and some variants of power metal, though out-with metal some of my favourite bands are more in the folk/indie space. I think the breadth of styles in our music is probably reflective of these fairly diverse influences.
John: A lot of the Celtic melodies are based on the scales and rhythms that you would normally find in Scottish folk music, but rather than play them on traditional instruments we’ve adapted them for distorted guitars instead. The idea being you end up with the same melodic energy and pace from the traditional music, melded with the raw power and expression you get from a death metal base.
LMA: Could you tell us about the creative process for Shade Beyond?
Sophie: The entire track was recorded at home during lockdown in Scotland during 2020, we probably spent four months on it from start to finish, but a lot of that time was mixing and mastering; the actual writing process took just a few days for some of the tracks.
John: We’ll typically start with a core melody, again drawn from traditional Scottish folk, and build it out from there on the guitars. Then Sophie will add a bassline, I’ll add some drums and we’ll work on the vocals together. I would say it’s been a very different experience writing with just the two of us rather than as a full band, we can move a lot faster from idea to a full track.
Sophie: Yes, we can start with initial melodies or structures over breakfast and have a rough song structure recorded by the evening if we’re feeling productive! It’s quite an interesting way of doing it.
LMA: Cinders are your most recent song that shows a more aggressive sound and that continues with this musical proposal developed on their debut album. What have been the reactions to this song from your fans and the specialized press?
John: With Cinders, we wanted to take the best elements that people loved and fed back to us about from Shade Beyond and compress all those elements into one three-minute breakneck track. We wanted to challenge ourselves to see if we could cram in blastbeats, fast riffs, solos, melodies and dual vocals all into the one song, and we’re really pleased with the result. It’s already our most saved song on Spotify by some way, and it only came out in mid-March.
Sophie: We’ve never spent so much time getting a track right, but as John says we are super happy with how it came out. It’s had a great reception since launch, with a lot of radio play, Spotify playlisting and it even hit #1 on the SubmitHub Hard Rock and Metal ‘Hot or Not’ Charts, which we were absolutely stunned by!
LMA: Are there any plans to release a full-length album in the future?
Sophie: Yes, we are absolutely working up another release, we are hoping for a full length to be ready before the end of summer.
John: We are hugely motivated by the response to the EP and the recent single to keep writing and see where we can take the sound. Shade Beyond was almost completely a DIY work from start to finish, so we’re really excited to be already working with an accomplished metal engineer in the UK for the future releases.
