Godsnake es una banda que presenta la agresividad y la fuerza que caracteriza al metal teutón orientado hacia la ejecución de sonidos melódicos y rítmicos influenciados por la vieja y nueva escuela del thrash metal. Poison Thorn es su álbum debut publicado en octubre pasado vía Massacre Records. La Magia Absalon tuvo la oportunidad de entrevistar a Torger, Stevo y Stefan acerca del pasado, presente y futuro de la banda.
La Magia Absalon: Muchas gracias por aceptar esta entrevista para La Magia Absalon. Godsnake se presenta al mundo con "Poison Thorn", su álbum debut. ¿Podrías contarnos sobre los orígenes de la banda?
Torger: Hola, te agradecemos esta oportunidad. Nuestros dos guitarristas (Stevo & Malt) están haciendo música juntos desde hace bastantes años. En 2014 decidieron grabar 4 temas para tener un EP. El bebé tenía que tener un nombre, así que GODSNAKE nació durante la sesión de grabación en el estudio. En ese momento, Stevo también seguía siendo el cantante. Hizo un trabajo fantástico como se puede escuchar en el EP, pero decidió que quería centrarse en el trabajo de las seis cuerdas, por lo que era necesario un líder. Para mi suerte :) me uní a la pandilla a fines de 2014 / principios de 2015. Se tocaron los primeros conciertos y la serpiente comenzó a desarrollarse, pero debido a cambios de alineación (bajo y batería) y razones laborales, aún era más un paseo de cámara lenta.
La Magia Absalon: La banda ya tiene un álbum anterior, un EP titulado “Hellbound Ride” lanzado en 2014. ¿En qué momento como banda decidieron que era el momento de dar el siguiente paso y comenzar a componer para un nuevo álbum?
Torger: En 2017 finalmente tuvimos una formación estable después de que Walt (bajo) y Sid (batería) se integraron. Todo se sentía bien y había una gran vibra. Fue entonces cuando definitivamente comenzamos a trabajar continuamente en nuestra música y comenzamos a enfocarnos en nuestro primer álbum componiendo/escribiendo nuevo material. Como Hellbound Ride era un EP de 4 pistas con un cantante diferente y tres de las canciones siguen siendo una parte importante de nuestra lista de canciones, sentimos la necesidad de grabar una versión actualizada de estas tres canciones para el álbum debut.
La Magia Absalon: "Poison Thorn" es un disco que tiene un sonido cercano al thrash metal con algunos elementos melódicos y oscuros que aportan frescura y variedad. ¿Cuáles son las influencias musicales que les ayudaron a consolidar tu propuesta musical?
Stevo: Hay muchas bandas y músicos que nos han influido. Nunca intentamos sonar exactamente como las bandas que nos gustan, sino que intentamos crear nuestro propio estilo/nicho. Pero por supuesto, el tipo de música que escuchas te influye automáticamente. Para nosotros, eso podría ser cualquier cosa, desde Metallica, Machine Head hasta Testament o Trivium (solo por nombrar algunos).
Torger: Creo que nuestra producción musical es solo un resultado lógico de lo que has absorbido a lo largo de los años como banda o músico. Como dice Stevo… no queremos copiar, pero no podemos negar nuestras raíces.
Y si alguien compara nuestro estilo y sonido con esos artistas... no hay quejas de nuestra parte.
La Magia Absalon: Lasse Lammert es un productor con una larga trayectoria que ha trabajado con bandas como Alestorm, Gloryhammer y Power Quest, solo por nombrar algunas, y ha sido un participante en este viaje musical que han emprendido desde "Hellbound Ride" y "Poison Thorn”. ¿Qué experiencias y aprendizaje han tenido como banda trabajando con él?
Stevo: Trabajar con Lasse ha sido un placer de principio a fin. Es muy fácil llevarse bien con él, pero muy profesional y enfocado en crear el mejor resultado posible para la banda. Personalmente he aprendido mucho de él, ya sea como guitarrista (es un guitarrista increíble además de productor) u otras cosas que afectan el sonido. Hubiera grabado las 10 canciones con un juego de cuerdas, pero él insistió en cambiar las cuerdas después de cada canción. Es muy particular sobre esas cosas, pero el resultado habla por sí solo.
La Magia Absalon: ¿Podrían contarnos sobre la portada del disco y cuál es el vínculo que tiene con la parte musical y lírica de la banda?
Torger: Queríamos una portada fuerte, oscura y simbólica. No había mejor opción para nosotros para hacer realidad nuestra visión que trabajar con Björn Gooßes de Killustrations. Hizo un trabajo increíble.
Me gustan las letras que dejan espacio para interpretaciones personales. Queríamos que POISON THORN se mostrara de una manera que hiciera pensar a la gente. La corona de espinas, el color venenoso ... simplemente fantástico. Mira la canción y deja que tu mente fluya :)
La Magia Absalon: ¿Cómo ha sido la respuesta de la prensa especializada y los fans sobre su disco debut?
Stefan: Las respuestas han sido muy positivas en su mayor parte. Se siente genial ver que el álbum está siendo tan bien recibido.
Torger: Y es muy agradable ver metaleros de todo el mundo brindándonos su apoyo. Se siente fantástico.
La Magia Absalon: Si tuvieran que elegir una canción que represente la esencia de “Poison Thorn”, ¿cuál sería y por qué?
Stevo: Probablemente elegiría “Stone the Crow”, porque tiene la pesadez, el ritmo combinado con algunas partes de melodía épica que nos gusta usar mucho en nuestras canciones.
Torger: Puedo vivir fácilmente con eso :)
La Magia Absalon: ¿Cómo ha enfrentado la banda estos tiempos de pandemia en los que los eventos masivos han tenido que posponerse o cancelarse y que históricamente han sido la principal vía para darse a conocer y consolidarse dentro de la escena?
Stevo: Es muy desafortunado para todos, pero en particular, para una banda que saca su álbum debut y necesita la presencia en vivo para conectarse más con los fans. Nos encantaría utilizar el impulso de las reacciones positivas más de lo que realmente podemos.
La Magia Absalon: Hablar de futuro es sinónimo de incertidumbre por la situación mundial que estamos viviendo, sin embargo, ¿cómo se ve la banda en unos años una vez que esta situación comience a normalizarse?
Stevo: Con suerte, una vez que las cosas se normalicen nuevamente, podamos salir y promocionar nuestro producto correctamente. Por supuesto, esperamos ponernos en el mapa durante los próximos años y atraer a una audiencia más grande.

INTERVIEW WITH GODSNAKE
Godsnake is a band that presents the aggressiveness and strength that characterizes teutonic metal oriented towards the execution of melodic and rhythmic sounds influenced by the old and new school of thrash metal. Poison Thorn is their debut album released last October via Massacre Records. La Magia Absalon had the opportunity to interview Torger, Stevo and Stefan about the past, present and future of the band.
La Magia Absalon: Thank you very much for accepting this interview for La Magia Absalon. Godsnake introduces yourself to the world with "Poison Thorn" your debut album. Could you tell us about the origins of the band?
Torger: Hi, we thank you for this opportunity. Our two guitar guys (Stevo & Malt) are making music together for quite some years. In 2014 they decided to record 4 tracks to have an EP. The baby had to have a name, so GODSNAKE was born during the recording session in the studio. At that time, Stevo was also still the singer. He did a fantastic job as you can hear on the EP, but he decided that he wants to focus on the six-string work, so there was the need for a frontman. My luck :) I joined the gang in late 2014/early 2015. The first gigs were played, and the snake started to develop, but due to line-up changes (Bass and Drums) and job reasons it was still more a slow-motion ride.
La Magia Absalon: The band already has a previous album, an EP titled “Hellbound Ride” released in 2014. At what point did you as a band decide that it was time to take the next step and start composing for a new album?
Torger: In 2017 we finally had a steady line-up after Walt (Bass) and Sid (Drums) moved in. Everything felt right and there was a great vibe. That´s when we definitely started to work continuously on our music and began to focus on our first album by composing/writing new material. As Hellbound Ride was a 4 track EP with a different singer and three of the songs are still an important part of our setlist, we felt the need to record an updated version of these three songs for the debut album.
La Magia Absalon: "Poison Thorn" is an album that has a sound close to thrash metal with some melodic and dark elements that add freshness and variety. What are the musical influences that helped you to consolidate your musical proposal?
Stevo: There are a lot of bands and musicians that have influenced us. We never try to sound exactly like the bands we like, but rather try to create our own style/niche. But of course, you are automatically influenced by the type of music you listen to. For us that could be anything from Metallica, Machine Head up to Testament or Trivium (just to name a few).
Torger: I think that our musical output is just a logical result of what you have absorbed over the years as a band or musician. As Stevo says… we don´t want to copy, but we can´t deny our roots.
And if somebody compares our style and sound with such artists... no complains from our side.
La Magia Absalon: Lasse Lammert is a producer with a long history working with bands like Alestorm, Gloryhammer and Power Quest just to name a few, and he has been a participant in this musical journey that you have undertaken from “Hellbound Ride” and “Poison Thorn”. What experiences and learning have you had as a band working with him?
Stevo: Working with Lasse has been a pleasure from start to finish. He is very easy to get along with, yet very professional and focused on creating the best possible result for the band. I personally have learnt a lot from him, whether as a guitar player (he is an amazing guitarist besides being a producer) or other stuff that affects the sound. I would have recorded all 10 songs with one set of strings, but he insisted on changing strings after every song. He is very particular about those things, but the result speaks for itself.
La Magia Absalon: Could you tell us about the album cover and what is the link it has with the musical and lyrical part of the band?
Torger: We wanted a strong, dark and symbolic cover. There was no better choice for us to get our vision realized than to work with Björn Gooßes from Killustrations. He did a killer job.
I like lyrics that leave some space for personal interpretations. We wanted POISON THORN to be shown in a way that makes people think. The crown of thorns, the poisonous colour… just fantastic. Check out the song and let your mind flow :)
La Magia Absalon: How have been the response of the specialized press and your fans about your debut album?
Stefan: The responses have been very positive for the most part. It feels great to see that the album is being so well received.
Torger: And it is very nice to see metalheads from all over the world giving us support. Feels fantastic.
La Magia Absalon: If you had to choose a song that represents the essence of “Poison Thorn” what would it be and why?
Stevo: I would probably choose Stone the Crow, because it has the heaviness, the groove combined with some epic melody parts which we like to use a lot in our songs.
Torger: I can easily live with that :)
La Magia Absalon: How the band have been dealt with these pandemic times where massive events have had to be postponed or cancelled and that historically have been the main way to make themselves known and consolidate within the scene?
Stevo: It is very unfortunate for everyone, but in particular, for a band putting out their debut album and needing the live presence to connect further with fans. We would love to use the momentum of the positive reactions more than we actually can.
La Magia Absalon: Talking about the future is synonymous with uncertainty due to the world situation we are experiencing, however, how is the band seen in a few years once this situation begins to normalize?
Stevo: Hopefully, once things normalize again, we are able to get out there and promote our product properly. Of course, we hope to put ourselves on the map over the next few years and draw a bigger audience.
