Velvet Ocean es una banda de metal melódico alternativo originaria de Oulu, Finlandia. Esta banda comenzó originalmente como un proyecto escrito entre la cantante Riitu y su esposo, el guitarrista Jarkko “Jake” Ronkainen. A medida que fue avanzando se fue convirtiendo en un proyecto de estudio que contó con la colaboración de músicos de sesión y miembros que eventualmente se fueron integrando a la banda como los violonchelistas Arto Alikoski y Harri Österman y el tecladista Marco Sneck.

Con la intención de conocer un poco más sobre la banda y su propuesta musical, La Magia Absalón tuvo la oportunidad de platicar con el matrimonio Ronkainen. Aquí la entrevista completa.
LMA: Muchas gracias por tomarse el tiempo para proporcionar esta entrevista para La Magia Absalón. ¿Te gustaría presentar Velvet Ocean a nuestro público mexicano y latinoamericano para que puedan saber un poco más sobre la banda?
Riitu y Jake: ¡Muchas gracias por la oportunidad! Velvet Ocean es una banda de metal melódico de siete miembros de Oulu, Finlandia del Norte. Llamamos a nuestro estilo metal alternativo ya que, en nuestra opinión, no encaja tan bien directamente en ninguna categoría en particular. Tenemos influencias de estilos musicales muy diferentes también fuera de la música metal. Creo que nuestros puntos fuertes son melodías memorables y voces femeninas convincentes y conmovedoras, así como la interacción entre instrumentos acústicos y electrónicos. La historia de la banda comenzó en 2015 y, a través de diferentes etapas, hemos lanzado nuestro álbum debut "Purposes and Promises" el 7 de febrero a través de la compañía discográfica finlandesa Helsinki Records. En este momento, por supuesto, estamos esperando que continúe el concierto y, mientras tanto, trabajamos en nuevo material para comenzar a grabar nuestro próximo sencillo.
LMA: Recientemente, han publicado su álbum debut “Purposes and Promises” a principios de año, ¿cómo consideras la respuesta del público a su propuesta musical?
Riitu y Jake: Aunque creemos que estamos en el comienzo de un gran viaje, sé que todavía hay mucho potencial sin explotar en la banda. LMA: Tuve la oportunidad de escuchar tu álbum debut y, aunque se definen como metal alternativo, muestran algunas influencias del metal melódico y gótico. ¿Cómo definen ese estilo musical que podemos escuchar en su álbum debut?
Riitu y Jake: Todo el proceso del álbum fue muy espontáneo en el sentido de que no creo que siquiera supiéramos al principio qué tipo de música de metal estaríamos haciendo. Además, no queríamos restringirnos para que pudieran escuchar material muy variado en el álbum. Creo que nuestra única guía fue que tratamos de hacer las cosas lo mejor que pudimos. Espero que nuestro estilo sea propio, pero ciertamente puedes escuchar influencias de muchos géneros diferentes.
LMA: ¿Quiénes son las influencias musicales que han ayudado a definir y consolidar el sonido de Velvet Ocean?
Jake: Hemos dicho antes que en nuestra música básicamente puedes escuchar influencias de toda la música que hemos escuchado. Puedo mencionar un par de mis bandas favoritas personales durante años como Halloween, Rage Against the Machine, Dream Theater, Pearl Jam, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Guns n’ Roses, Rainbow, Iron Maiden, Protest the Hero y héroes de la guitarra como Steve Vai, Steve Morse, Joe Satriani y Al Di Meola.
Riitu: Yo estaba escuchando mucha música pop y música Schlager Finlandesa. Las primeras bandas de metal que descubrí y que realmente me gustaron fueron Metallica, así como Stratovarius y To/Die/For. Mis influencias posteriores incluyen Within Tempation, Evanescence y Amorphis entre otros.
LMA: ¿Cómo fue el proceso de composición y grabación de “Purposes and Promises”?
Jake: Velvet Ocean en realidad comenzó como un proyecto escrito por mí y la cantante principal Riitu. Al principio, pasamos más de medio año armando canciones y una vez que comenzamos a sentirnos seguros de que el álbum iba a suceder, comenzamos a reunir músicos de estudio y más tarde miembros permanentes de la banda. El proceso fue quizás un poco particular en el sentido de que nunca tocamos las canciones juntas como banda, pero los arreglos siguieron evolucionando en las sesiones de grabación. Finalmente, el álbum fue aprobado para mezclarlo y masterizarlo en un estudio de primer nivel Fascination Street Studios en Suecia. Después de la masterización, nos tomamos un tiempo extra para encontrar un editor para el álbum y finalmente conseguimos que Maki Kolehmainen de Helsinki Records se interesara.
Riitu: Creo que la creación del álbum fue una especie de proceso de aprendizaje. Experimentamos muchas cosas diferentes y se podría decir que estábamos buscando qué tipo de música queremos hacer. De esa manera el proceso fue muy intuitivo. Se dedicó mucho tiempo a hacer el álbum lo más original posible.
LMA: Finlandia es un país donde la escena del metal es popular y tenemos grandes exponentes cuya música ha cruzado fronteras. ¿Cómo consideras que es la escena musical en este periodo de confinamiento?
Riitu y Jake: Por supuesto, todo el negocio recibió algunos castigos serios con toda la escena en vivo deteniéndose abruptamente. El momento no fue perfecto para nosotros tampoco, ya que estábamos ansiosos por tocar las canciones en vivo para finalmente interactuar con el público. En estos tiempos alterados, necesariamente debes comenzar a pensar en formas alternativas de operar y creo que muchas bandas, incluidos nosotros, han adoptado conciertos en línea y también pasaron tiempo para escribir música nueva. Espero que finalmente todos salgamos de esto mejor que nunca. Ciertamente espero que los organizadores de conciertos, los lugares de conciertos, los ingenieros de sonido y todos puedan hacer frente financieramente a la situación.
LMA: ¿Hay planes para Velvet Ocean para cuando la situación de pandemia comienza a normalizarse?
Riitu y Jake: Todavía no hemos comenzado a fijar nuevas fechas de conciertos ya que, sinceramente, nadie sabe cuándo terminará todo esto. Sin embargo, tenemos planes inmediatos para comenzar a grabar música nueva.

Velvet Ocean is an alternative melodic metal band originating from Oulu, Finland. This band originally started as a project written between singer Riitu and her husband, guitarist Jarkko "Jake" Ronkainen. As it progressed, it became a studio project with the collaboration of session musicians and members who eventually joined the band, such as cellists Arto Alikoski and Harri Österman and keyboardist Marco Sneck.
“Purposes and Promises” is the band's debut album and it presents to us on a lyrical level part of the personal experiences of Riitu and Jakke with a musical fusion that combines the strength of the metal product of their musical influences from the members of this group.
With the intention of knowing a little more about the band and its musical proposal, La Magia Absalón had the opportunity to talk with the Ronkainen couple. Here’s the complete interview.
LMA: Thank you very much for taking the time to provide this interview for La Magia Absalon. Would you like to introduce Velvet Ocean to our Mexican and latinamerican public so they can know a little more about the band.
Riitu and Jake: Thank you very much for the opportunity! Velvet Ocean is a seven members’ melodic metal band from Oulu, Northern Finland. We call our style alternative metal since in our opinion it doesn’t fit so well directly into any particular category. We have influences from quite different musical styles also outside metal music. I think our strongpoints are memorable melodies and convincing and touching female vocals as well as interplay of acoustic and electronic instruments. The bands story started in 2015 and through different stages we have now released our debut album “Purposes and Promises” 7th of February through a Finnish record company Helsinki Records. Right now, we are of course waiting for the gigging to continue and meanwhile working on new material to start recordings of our next single.
LMA: You published your debut album “Purposes and Promises” at the beginning of the year, how do you consider the public's response to your musical proposal?
Riitu and Jake; Altogether I think we are just in the beginning of a great journey. I know there is still a lot of untapped potential in the band. However this far the reactions have been really positive and I think we are heading the right direction. Honestly, I never thought we would get this far in just a couple of years.
LMA: I had the opportunity to listen to your debut album and although you define yourselves as alternative metal, you show some influences from melodic and gothic metal. How did you define that musical style that we can hear on your debut album?
Riitu and Jake: The whole album process was very spontaneous in the sense that I don’t think that we even knew ourselves in the beginning what kind of metal music we would be doing. In addition, we didn’t really want to restrict ourselves at all so you can hear pretty varied material in the album. I think the only guiding thing was that we just tried to do things as well as we possibly could. I hope the style is our own but certainly you can hear influences from many different genres.
LMA: Who are the musical influences that have helped define and consolidate the sound of Velvet Ocean?
Jake: We have said before that in our music you can basically hear influences from all the music we have ever listened. I can mention a couple of my personal favourite bands during years like Halloween, Rage Against the Machine, Dream Theater, Pearl Jam, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Guns n’ Roses, Rainbow, Iron Maiden, Protest the Hero as well as guitars heroes like Steve Vai, Steve Morse, Joe Satriani and Al Di Meola.
Riitu: Younger I was listening to a lot of pop music and Finnish schlager music. The first metal bands that I discovered and really liked was Metallica as well as Stratovarius and To/Die/For. My later influences include Within Tempation, Evanescence and Amorphis among others.
LMA: How was the composition and recording process for Purposes And Promises?
Jake: Velvet Ocean actually started as a writing project of me and the lead singer Riitu. In the beginning we spent over a half a year just putting together songs and once we started feeling confident that the album will happen, we started gathering studio musicians and later permanent band members. The process was perhaps a bit particular in the sense that we never really played the songs together as a band but the arrangements kept evolving in the recording sessions. Eventually the album was passed for mixing and mastering to a top notch studio Fascination Street Studios in Sweden. After mastering we took some extra time to find a publisher for the album and eventually got Helsinki Records’ Maki Kolehmainen interested.
Riitu: I think the album making was a sort of a learning process. We experimented a lot of different things and you could say that we were kind of in search for what kind of music we want to do. In that way the process was very intuitive. A lot of time was spent to make the album as original as possible.
LMA: Finland is a country where the metal scene is popular, and we have great exponents whose music has crossed borders. How do you consider the music scene to be in these confined times?
Riitu and Jake: Of course, the whole business took some serious punishment with the whole live scene stopping abruptly. The timing wasn’t perfect for us either since we were eagerly waiting to get to play the songs live to finally interact with the audience. In these altered times you have to necessarily start thinking alternative ways to operate and I think very many bands, us included, have adopted stream gigs and also spent time to write new music. I hope eventually we will all rise from this better than ever. I certainly hope the concert organisers, gig places, sound engineers and everybody will be able to financially cope with the situation.
LMA: Are there plans for Velvet Ocean for when the pandemic situation begins to normalize?
Riitu and Jake: We haven’t yet started fixing new gig dates since honestly nobody knows when this all will eventually end. However, we have immediate plans to start recording some new music.
LMA: Any words you would like to add for your fans from around the world?
Riitu and Jake: We have had a genuine intention to make some original and memorable music. Please go check out our album! You never know if you might like something you hear! Let’s all stay healthy, let’s take care and help each other through this difficult time!
