Phoebus The Knight publicó el mes pasado “Ferrum Fero Ferro Feror” su primer álbum de larga duración que describe las aventuras de Phoebus y sus amigos, los caballeros de la Heliópolis para derrotar a la bestia y su deseo de guerra eterna. Esta banda francesa de metal sinfónico ofreció una entrevista para La Magia Absalón en la que nos platican un poco acerca del proceso creativo que da identidad a la banda, los retos que enfrentaron en la producción de su álbum debut y acerca del futuro.
LMA: Gracias por darnos la oportunidad de entrevistarlos para La Magia Absalón. Phoebus The Knight es una banda de reciente creación dentro de la escena musical. ¿Podrían contarnos cómo surgió la idea de formar esta banda?
Axel (Voces): Desde que era un niño, siempre he tenido una pasión por los mundos de fantasía. Y como tuve mi revelación para el canto en 2012, mi sueño era crear una banda de metal sinfónico. Más tarde, tenía en mente la historia de Phoebus y los caballeros de Heliópolis, y era hora de que hiciera realidad mi sueño. Entonces, en 2017, le pregunté a mi amigo Adrien Djouadou si quería componer la música para el proyecto y dijo que sí. Encontramos a nuestros músicos y compañeros para formar la banda y, a partir de ahí, ¡comenzó la aventura!
LMA: La escena del metal a nivel mundial es muy diversa no sólo en términos musicales, sino también en lo que a composición se refiere. En el caso de Phoebus The Knight, el proyecto surge de una historia que fue tomando forma a través de la música y que se ha profundizado en “The Last Guardian” y “Ferrum Fero Ferro Feror”. ¿Cómo se dio este proceso creativo/conceptual?
Axel: Cuando creamos un proyecto, primero envío una lluvia de ideas a los miembros de la banda que resume la historia y el tema de cada pista. Una vez aceptado, escribí la letra de la canción y luego se la envío a Adrien para que la componga.
Adrien D. (Guitarra/Composición): Cuando obtengo la letra, la música fluye automáticamente en mi mente para describir musicalmente la historia de Axel. Entro en mi computadora y empiezo a escribir las partes orquestales primero, luego hago todo el resto en uno o tres días y ¡tenemos una canción! ¡Siempre trabajamos de esa manera!
LMA: La presencia de elementos sinfónicos es una característica en el estilo musical de la banda y eso le da más realismo a la parte conceptual. ¿Cuáles son sus principales influencias musicales y cómo ayudaron a consolidar la propuesta musical de la banda?
Adrien D.: Para componer la música de la banda, elegí, con la aprobación de Axel, Rhapsody of Fire, Cradle of Filth, Nightwish, Epica, Fairyland y Powerwolf como base para determinar lo que íbamos a hacer. Pero también quería que la banda tuviera una visión original del género, así que también me inspiré en los viejos maestros de la música clásica y romántica como Rachmaninov, Mozart, Puccini, Fauré, Brahms, Verdi, Bach y Wagner. ¡Intento escribir partes orquestales y melodías que a veces recuerden a esos compositores e incluso los cité en nuestras canciones! A partir de ahí, sumo mi sensibilidad personal para describir en música la historia de Axel.
Axel: En mi gusto personal, son Tarja, Nightwish, Epica y Within Temptation. Obviamente, hay muchas otras bandas que me influyen, así como compositores de música de cine o música llamada clásica y tradicional. ¡Toda esta gente me da la fuerza para crear un proyecto hermoso, un proyecto digno de ellos!
LMA: Phoebus The Knight tiene dos lanzamientos: "The Last Guardian" y "Ferrum Fero Ferro Feror", ¿podrías contarnos brevemente la historia conceptual detrás de cada uno?
Adrien D.: Durante “The Last Guardian”, una misteriosa entidad malvada llamada Bestia ataca la fortaleza enana de Baraz Dûm en Islandia para desencadenar la erupción del monte Laki que tendrá un efecto terrible en la agricultura de Francia y ayuda a desencadenar la Revolución. A partir de ahí la Bestia y sus vampiros manipularán a las personas para conducirlas a la violencia. Los caballeros de Heliópolis, héroes de la historia, intuyendo el peligro que se avecina, participarán en la declaración de los derechos del hombre y del ciudadano para dar esperanza al mundo pero, durante ese tiempo, la Bestia secuestrará a Selene, la Reina de Hierro, alma gemela de Phoebus, que estaba rezando en Notre-Dame.
Axel: "Ferrum Fero Ferro Feror" es la secuela directa de "The Last Guardian". Se desarrolla en tres actos. El primero en la dimensión olvidada del "bosque más oscuro" donde Phoebus va en busca de su amada Selene. El segundo acto sigue las aventuras de su némesis, la Bestia, de regreso al infierno después de ser derrotado por Phoebus y Selene para encontrar sus tropas para llevar a cabo sus malvados planes. Y, finalmente, el último tiene lugar en París al comienzo del Reino del Terror en septiembre de 1792. La Bestia encontró a su alma gemela, Lilith, y junto con tropas del infierno atacarán París. Los caballeros defenderán la ciudad, pero debido al poder de la lanza del Destino en poder de Lilith, soportarán la derrota... por ahora... (risas).
LMA: El lanzamiento del primer álbum plantea una serie de desafíos para las bandas independientes. ¿Cuáles creen que han sido los desafíos que han enfrentado en este proceso?
Guillaume (batería): ¡Fue un desafío en todos los niveles! Para algunos miembros (incluyéndome a mí) fue el primer álbum que grabamos. El objetivo era no sentir ninguna diferencia entre nosotros y los cabezas de cartel de la escena (Nightwish, Epica, Cradle...), por lo que había cierta presión a este nivel, en términos de composición, técnica musical en nuestros instrumentos, en el sonido que queríamos tener, nuestra identidad visual, etc.
¡Pero fue un gran desafío que superamos con orgullo! Todos pudieron aprender de este primer álbum. ¡Y los próximos serán aún mejores!
Por mi parte, también tuve que integrarme en una banda que se acababa de formar y con gente que no conocía. Y tuvimos que trabajar de inmediato en las pistas de batería, trabajar en mi personaje, la identidad visual, aprender a tocar partes de batería que aún no sabía, etc. ¡Más allá de un desafío profesional, fue un verdadero desafío personal! Pero hoy creo que todos estamos muy orgullosos del resultado, y estamos aún más motivados para el siguiente paso, ¡que va a ser genial!
Adrien D.: Por mi parte, he hecho varios álbumes de forma independiente en el pasado (con Nobelium y Sentinhell), así que no todo era nuevo para mí. Diría que organizar las grabaciones con la banda lejos para asegurarse de que todos tocarían o cantarían la música de la manera correcta fue el mayor desafío para mí como "productor musical". Tuve que controlar y guiar muchas cosas simultáneamente mientras grababa mis partes y hacía todo el trabajo de mezcla previa después. Estaba feliz de darle las tareas de mezcla y masterización al poderoso Joost van den Broek, quien nos cocinó un sonido increíble.
Axel: Siendo este álbum el primero, fue una gran curva de aprendizaje para mí y se cometieron algunos errores, ¡especialmente en la parte del lanzamiento (risas)! Pero lo conseguimos y hoy somos mucho más fuertes. ¡Estamos ansiosos por mostrártelo en concierto! El próximo será, en cualquier caso, más fácil de soltar.
LMA: Ya han tenido la oportunidad de experimentar con algunos conciertos, ¿cómo se han sentido al respecto?
Guillaume: ¡Nos sentimos felices y orgullosos! No hay nada como poder ofrecer al mundo nuestras propias composiciones y verlos apreciarlas en directo. Es un sentimiento que no mucha gente tiene, y creo que todos estamos felices de poder ver a la gente cantando nuestras canciones, bailando y moviendo la cabeza frente a nosotros, ¡es simplemente increíble! Y también hay muy buena química en el escenario entre todos los miembros, la sensación es muy agradable.
Adrien D.: Me encantó tocar nuestra música en el escenario y ver la gran respuesta del público. Experimentamos dos comportamientos de la gente. La primera era que se volvían completamente locos, gritando todo el camino y moviendo fuertemente la cabeza mientras cantaban las canciones y la segunda era que estaban muy atentos y cautivados y hacían ruido solo al final de una canción, aplaudiendo fuerte. ¡Realmente me gustó ver esos dos tipos de respuesta y eso hizo que la experiencia en vivo fuera diferente!
Axel: Contar una historia completa en el escenario de un concierto de metal es un verdadero desafío. ¡El público realmente apreció el concepto en las primeras tres fechas que hicimos y su respuesta fue increíble! ¡También descubrimos cómo mejorarlo para que la audiencia se sintiera más involucrada en la historia!
LMA: ¿Cómo se ve Phoebus The Knight en el futuro?
Axel: ¡Una historia más rica, novelas que acompañarán cada álbum y EP y siempre más shows en vivo!
Adrien D.: El segundo álbum está en camino de ser completamente escrito y compuesto, elevará a la banda en términos de música y orquestaciones. No puedo esperar para entregarlo al público. Phoebus the Knight se enriquecerá y profundizará en su construcción e historia. ¡La historia que escribió Axel es increíble y verás a dónde va todo en este próximo lanzamiento de larga duración!
Guillaume: ¡La banda dará un giro aún mayor! Como se dijo antes, todos los miembros han progresado en varios puntos. Ya sea desde el punto de vista técnico, en el escenario, en términos de organización y especialmente en términos de composición. No voy a decir más, pero sepa que lo que viene a continuación será un nivel superior, ¡y ciertamente no está listo!

INTERVIEW WITH PHOEBUS THE KNIGHT
Phoebus The Knight released last month “Ferrum Fero Ferro Feror” their first full-length album which depicts the adventures of Phoebus and his friends, the knights of Heliopolis to defeat the beast and their desire for eternal war. This French symphonic metal band gave an interview for La Magia Absalón in which they told us a little about the creative process that gives the band their identity, the challenges they faced in the production of their debut album and about the future.
LMA: Thank you for giving us the opportunity to interview you for La Magia Absalon. Phoebus The Knight is a recently created band within the music scene. Could you tell us about how the idea of forming this band came about?
Axel (Vocals): Ever since I was a child, I have always had a passion for fantasy worlds. And since I had my revelation for singing in 2012, my dream was to create a symphonic metal band. Later, I had the story of Phoebus and the knights of Heliopolis in mind, and it was time for me to realize my dream. So, in 2017, I asked to my friend Adrien Djouadou if he wanted to compose the music for the Project and he said yes! We found our musicians and companions to form the band and, from there, the adventure began!
LMA: The metal scene worldwide is very diverse not only in terms of music, but also in terms of composition. In the case of Phoebus The Knight, the project arises from a story that was taking shape through music and has been deepened in "The Last Guardian" and "Ferrum Fero Ferro Feror". How did this creative / conceptual process take place?
Axel: When we create a project, I first submit a mood board to the band members that summarizes the story and theme of each track. Once the mood board is accepted, I wrote the lyrics of the song then I send them to Adrien so that he can compose.
Adrien D. (Guitar): When I get the lyrics, music automatically flows in my mind to describe musically the story of Axel. I go on my computer and start to write the orchestral parts first, then I do all the rest in one to three days and we have a song! We always process that way!
LMA: The presence of symphonic elements is a feature in the musical style of the band and that adds more realism to the conceptual part. What are your main musical influences and how did they help consolidate the band's musical proposal?
Adrien D. : To compose the music of the band, I chose, with Axel’s approval, Rhapsody of Fire, Cradle of Filth, Nightwish, Epica, Fairyland and Powerwolf as a base to determine what we were going to do. But I also wanted the band to have an original take on the genre so I also got inspiration from old masters of classical and romantic music such as Rachmaninov, Mozart, Puccini, Fauré, Brahms, Verdi, Bach and Wagner. I try to write orchestral parts and melodies that will remind sometimes those composers and even quote them in our songs ! From there I add my personal sensibility to describe in music the story of Axel.
Axel: For my personal tastes, it is Tarja, Nightwish, Epica and Within Temptation. There are obviously a lot of other bands that influence me as well as composers of film music or music called classical as well as traditional. All these people give me the strength to create a beautiful project, a project worthy of them!
LMA: Phoebus The Knight has two releases: "The Last Guardian" and "Ferrum Fero Ferro Feror", could you briefly tell us the conceptual story behind each one?
Adrien D.: During “The Last Guardian”, a mysterious evil entity called the Beast attacks the dwarf frotress of Baraz Dûm in Iceland to trigger the eruption of the mount Laki that will have a terrible effect on the agriculture of France and helps trigger the Revolution. From there the Beast and his vampires will manipulate the people to lead them to violence. The knights of Heliopolis, heroes of the story, sensing the upcoming danger, will participate in the declaration of the rights of man and of the citizen to give hope to the world but, during that time, the Beast will kidnapp Selene, the Iron Queen, soulmate of Phoebus, who was praying in Notre-Dame.
Axel: "Ferrum Fero Ferro Feror" is the direct sequel to "The Last Guardian". It takes place in three acts. The first in the forgotten dimension of the "darkest Woods" where Phoebus goes in search of his beloved Selene. The second act follows the adventures of their nemesis, the Beast, back to Hell after being defeated by Phoebus and Selene to find his troops to carry his evil plans. And, finally, the last one takes place in Paris at the beginning of the Reign of Terror in September 1792. The Beast found his soulmate, Lilith, and together, with troops from hell, they will attack Paris. The knights will defend the city but because of the power of the spear of Destiny held by Lilith, they will endure defeat…for now…(laughs)
LMA: The release of the first album poses a series of challenges for independent bands. What do you think have been the challenges you have faced in this process?
Guillaume (Drums): It was a challenge on all levels! For some members (including me) it was the first album we recorded. The objective was to not feel any difference between us and the headliners of the scene (Nightwish, Epica, Cradle...), so there was a certain pressure on this level, in terms of composition, musical technique on our instruments, on the sound we wanted to have, our visual identity, etc.
But it was a great challenge that we proudly passed! Everyone was able to learn from this first album. And the next ones will be even better!
For my part, I also had to integrate myself in a band that had just been formed and with people I didn't know. And we had to work immediately on the drum tracks, work on my character, the visual identity, learn to play drum parts that I didn't know yet, etc. Beyond a professional challenge it was a real personal challenge! But today I think we are all very proud of the result, and we are even more motivated for the next step which is going to be great!
Adrien D.: On my end I have done several albums independently in the past (with Nobelium and Sentinhell) so it was not all new to me. I would say that organizing the recordings with everyone being far away to be sure everyone would play or sing the music in a right way was the biggest challenge for me as a “musical producer”. I had to control and guide a lot of things simultaneously while also recording my parts and doing all the pre-mixing work afterward. I was happy to give the mixing and mastering tasks to the mighty Joost van den Broek who cooked us an amazing sound ¡
Axel: This album being my first, it was a huge learning curve for me and some mistakes were made, especially for the release part (laughs)! But we got it out and we are much stronger today. We can't wait to show it to you in concert! The next one will, in any case, be easier to release.
LMA: You have already had the opportunity to experiment with some concerts, how have you felt about it?
Guillaume: We feel happy and proud! There is nothing like being able to offer the world our own compositions and see them appreciating them live. It's a feeling that not many people get, and I think we're all happy to be able to see people singing our songs, dancing and headbanging in front of us, it's just amazing! And there is also a very good chemistry on stage between all the members, the feeling is really nice.
Adrien D.: I loved to play our music on stage and see the great response of the public. We experienced two behaviors from the people. The first was they went completely crazy, screaming all the way and headbanging heavily while singing the songs and the second one was they were very attentive and captivated and they would make noise only at the end of a song, applauding strongly. I really liked to see those two types of response and that made experience the live differently!
Axel: Telling a complete story on stage in a metal concert is a real challenge. The public really appreciated the concept on the first three dates that we did and their response was amazing ! We also figured out how to improve it to make the audience feel more involved in the story!
LMA: What does Phoebus The Knight look like in the future?
Axel: A richer story, novels that will accompany each albums and EPs and always more live shows !
Adrien D. : The second album is on its way to be fully written and composed it will bring the band higher in terms of music and orchestrations. I can’t wait to deliver it to the public. Phoebus the Knight will get richer and deeper in its construction and story. The story Axel wrote is awesome and you will see where everything is going in this next full-lenght release !
Guillaume: The band will take an even bigger turn! As said before, all the members have progressed on several points. Whether it is from a technical point of view, on stage, in term of organization and especially in term of composition. I'm not going to say more, but know that what's coming next is going to be a level above, and you're certainly not ready!
