Leaves Eyes’ presenta a finales del año pasado “The Last Viking”, un álbum que ha recibido críticas positivas por parte de la prensa especializada. La Magia Absalon tuvo la oportunidad de platicar con Alexander Krull, Thorsten Bauer “Tosso” y Elina Siirala acerca del álbum, la evolución de la banda y el futuro frente a la pandemia.
LMA: Muchas gracias por concedernos esta entrevista para La Magia Absalon. “The Last Viking” fue lanzado hace unas semanas, ¿podrías contarnos sobre el concepto detrás de este álbum?
Alex: ¡La historia del álbum "The Last Viking" tiene un trasfondo fantástico! Las aventuras del rey nórdico Harald III llamado "Hardrada". ¡Ya en el último álbum “Sign of the Dragonhead” teníamos la canción “Waves of Euphoria” que trata de la saga de Hardrada! Leí la saga de Harald III. llamado "Hardrada" que significa gobernante duro. Y también hice investigaciones históricas durante mucho tiempo. Las aventuras del rey nórdico Hardrada son muy emocionantes, supongo que podrías hacer fácilmente un gran programa de televisión como Game of Thrones, tal vez incluso se inspiraron en esta saga. Comenzamos el álbum en el momento en que Hardrada muere y recibe una flecha en el cuello en Stamford Bridge en Inglaterra en la batalla por la corona de Inglaterra. En el último suspiro, toda su vida regresa en flashes y estamos llevando a los oyentes de regreso a las aventuras del rey nórdico donde viaja por países lejanos, tuvo que huir cuando era joven de Noruega, luchando por el rey ruso Jaroslav en la tierra de la Rus (Rusia) y sirviendo a la guardia de Varangian, casándose con una princesa rusa y regresando a Noruega como rico señor de la guerra para convertirse en rey. Qué historia y qué impacto en la historia: después de la muerte de Harald Hardrada en 1066, la era vikinga había terminado.
LMA: El concepto detrás de Leaves 'Eyes muestra ese vínculo entre la parte musical e histórica, siendo aspectos que han desarrollado desde el inicio de su carrera y que aún siguen vigentes. ¿Cuál es el desafío desde la perspectiva de un músico y productor al crear álbumes conceptuales como The Last Viking?
Alex: ¡Esta saga épica de “The Last Viking” exige también canciones de metal épicas! Con nuestra música queremos invitar a nuestros fans a un viaje aventurero en la época vikinga. El mayor desafío, pero también muy divertido para nosotros, es convertir esas sagas en música. Y, de hecho, todo el álbum es un trabajo musical muy orientado a las canciones, con una gran producción en la parte posterior para apoyar la música en sí, desde instrumentos clásicos, grandes coros, gritos vikingos hasta instrumentos naturales tradicionales como Nyckelharpa, Fiddles y grandes tambores de guerra combinados con el sonido del heavy metal. Así que siempre hay mucho trabajo y pasión en nuestras canciones y una producción de Leaves 'Eyes.
Tosso: Nos encanta trabajar con instrumentos y músicos reales. Así que, por ejemplo, trabajamos con nuestro amigo e ícono de Nyckelharpa, Thomas Roth, quien vino a nuestra sede y tocó varias canciones, así como con Lea-Sophie Fischer de Russkaja en violín. Lea-Sophie se puede escuchar con su hermoso violín tocando, por ejemplo, en la parte media de “Dark Love Empress”. Todos estos grandes músicos y sus instrumentos agregan colores de sonido hechos a mano al álbum, lo cual es muy importante para nosotros. El sonido del Nyckelharpa, por ejemplo, tiene la capacidad de permitirle viajar en el tiempo y llevarlo a lugares sobre los que trata el concepto.
LMA: El disco ha tenido una respuesta positiva por parte de la prensa especializada, ¿cómo ha sido la reacción de los fans y qué satisfacción tienen como banda ante estos comentarios?
Tosso: Habiendo trabajado tanto y tanto tiempo en el estudio para este nuevo álbum, ahora es muy emocionante recibir comentarios tan buenos de nuestros fans. Las reacciones han sido realmente fantásticas, muchos fans piensan que este podría ser nuestro mejor disco hasta ahora. También grabamos 3 videoclips para el nuevo álbum, lo que nos da la oportunidad de visualizar las historias y los temas del álbum. Todo el mundo está muy contento con "The Last Viking". Alex estaba filmando y dirigiendo el último video WAR OF KINGS que resultó muy bueno.
LMA: En The Last Viking, una de las colaboraciones que más llamó la atención fue la participación de Clementine Delauney (Visions of Atlantis) en la canción Black Butterfly. ¿Cómo tuvo lugar esta interacción entre la banda y Clementine en el estudio de grabación?
Tosso: Conocemos a Clementine ya de giras junto con Visions of Atlantis y Melted Space. Así que ya teníamos una buena imagen de sus grandes habilidades vocales y pensamos que sería una idea emocionante tenerla como vocalista invitada en “Black Butterfly”. Creo que el resultado fue fantástico.
Elina: Queríamos una cantante con un tipo de voz diferente a la mía, que aportara otro personaje y contraste a la canción. “Black Butterfly” es una elección perfecta, ya que brinda la oportunidad de resaltar nuestras dos voces sin dejar de mezclarlas y la división de los versos y otras partes también funcionó de manera muy natural. ¡Fuimos muy afortunados de que Clementine pudiera viajar al estudio durante estos tiempos difíciles y grabar con ella fue una gran experiencia! Espero que algún día podamos tocar la canción en vivo.
LMA: Elina Siirala es la integrante más nueva de la banda y ha mostrado sus cualidades vocales en The Last Viking. ¿Qué evolución han identificado como banda a partir de este cambio en el rol vocal?
Tosso: En realidad, nuestro miembro más reciente es nuestro guitarrista Micki Richter, quien agregó algunos grandes solos de guitarra al álbum. Elina está en la banda desde hace más de 4 años y tocamos en muchas giras y festivales en todo el mundo y también pasamos mucho tiempo juntos en el estudio. Así que hay un fuerte vínculo y confianza dentro de la banda, lo cual es genial para poder concentrarse en la nueva música. Elina tiene una voz muy potente y cálida con un trasfondo clásico, que es la pareja perfecta para nuestra música grandilocuente, opulenta y nórdica.
LMA: Leaves 'Eyes es uno de los referentes del Viking Metal en los últimos años, y una de las motivaciones que los llevó a desarrollar este concepto musical tiene su origen en las raíces familiares de Alex. Este estilo de vida vikingo fue llevado más allá en un documental llamado “The Viking Spirit” que se incluye en una de las ediciones especiales de este álbum. ¿Podrías contarnos sobre este proyecto?
Alex: Amo a los vikingos y sí, también soy un luchador de espadas en la escena de recreación vikinga. Estoy haciendo esto durante muchos años, entrenando cada semana, yendo a batallas, campamentos, eventos y torneos para luchar y teniendo amigos vikingos en todo el mundo. El grupo JOMSBORG del que formo parte es el ejército vikingo moderno más grande y el grupo internacional más grande que existe en muchos países y continentes. Como dijiste, mi padre era incluso del área del Mar Báltico donde nació la saga de Jomsborg. Entonces, dado que participo en todas estas locas batallas, por supuesto que también me encanta hacer música sobre estos eventos históricos, como la batalla decisiva en Stamford Bridge, que es parte de la saga del rey nórdico Hardarda. Con el álbum también lanzamos el DVD "Viking Spririt", que es un documental de más de 90 minutos en el que puedes descubrir gran parte de la fascinación del estilo de vida vikingo, la historia viva, la mitología nórdica y la conexión con la música de Leaves 'Eyes. Supongo que los vikingos dejaron muchas huellas importantes en muchos países, esa es probablemente una de las razones por las que las leyendas, tradiciones y sagas todavía están vivas y personas de todo el mundo se enamoran de la historia vikinga. Por cierto, la banda sonora de “Viking Spirit” también es genial y está disponible como la película en la edición Artbook del nuevo álbum.
LMA: Sabemos que debido a la pandemia no es posible que las bandas regresen a los escenarios. ¿Has considerado otras alternativas para promocionar The Last Viking?
Elina: En este momento, estamos organizando una gira europea para la segunda mitad de 2021. Estamos seguros de que la música en vivo y el metal volverán el próximo año. Las transmisiones en vivo nunca pueden reemplazar la emoción y la experiencia de un espectáculo en vivo real.

INTERVIEW WITH LEAVES EYES'
Leaves Eyes’ presented "The Last Viking" at the end of last year, an album that has received positive reviews from the specialized press. The Magic Absalon had the opportunity to talk with Alexander Krull, Thorsten Bauer “Tosso” and Elina Siirala about the album, the evolution of the band and the future in the face of the pandemic.
LMA: Thank you very much for granting us this interview for La Magia Absalon. The Last Viking was released a few weeks ago, could you tell us about the concept behind this album?
Alex: The story of “The Last Viking” album has a fantastic background! The adventures of Norse king Harald III called “Hardrada”. Already on the last album “Sign of the Dragonhead” we had the song “Waves of Euphoria” dealing with Hardrada's saga! I read the saga of Harald III. called “Hardrada” which means hard-ruler. And I did also historic research for a long time. The adventures of Norse king Hardrada are very exciting, I guess you could easily make a big tv show like Game of Thrones out of it, maybe they got even inspired by this saga. We start the album at the moment when Hardrada dies and getting hit by an arrow in his neck at Stamford Bridge in England in the battle for the crown of England. In the last breath his whole life comes back in flashes and we are taking the listeners back into the adventures of the Norse king where he travels through far away countries, had to flee as young man from Norway, fighting for the Rus king Jaroslav in the land of the Rus (Russia) and serving the Varangian guard, getting married to a Russian Princess and returning to Norway as rich warlord to become a king. What a story and what an impact to history - after Harald Hardrada's death in 1066, the Viking age was over.
LMA: The concept behind Leaves' Eyes shows that link between the musical and historical part, being aspects that they have developed since the beginning of their career and that is still valid today. What is the challenge from a musician and producer perspective in creating concept albums like The Last Viking?
Alex: This epic saga on “The Last Viking” demands also epic metal songs! With our music we want to invite our fans to an adventerous journey into the Viking times. The biggest challenge but also great fun for us is to turn such sagas into music. And indeed the whole album is a very song oriented work of music, with a huge production in the back to support the music itself – from classical instruments, big choirs, Viking shouts to traditional natural instruments like Nyckelharpa, Fiddles and big war drums combined with the heavy metal sound. So it's always lot of work and passion in our songs and a Leaves' Eyes production. Tosso: We love to work with real instruments and musicians. So for example we worked with our friend and Nyckelharpa player icon Thomas Roth, who came to our headquarters and jammed along to several songs, as well as Lea-Sophie Fischer from Russkaja on violine. Lea-Sophie can be heard with her beautiful violine playing for example in the midpart of “Dark Love Empress”. All these great players and their instruments ad handmade sound colours to the album, which is very important for us. The sound of the Nyckelharpa for example has this ability to let you travel back in time and take you to places that the concept is about.
LMA: The album has had a positive response from the specialized press, how has the reaction of your fans been and what satisfaction have you as a band given these comments?
Tosso: Having worked so hard and a long time in the studio for this new album, it is now very exciting to get such great feedbacks from our fans. The reactions have been really fantastic yet, a lot of fans think this might be our best record so far. We also shot 3 video clips for the new album, which gives us a chance to visualize the stories and themes on the album. Everybody is very happy with “The Last Viking”. Alex was filming and directing the latest video WAR OF KINGS which turned out bad ass!
LMA: In The Last Viking, one of the collaborations that attracted attention was the participation of Clementine Delauney (Visions of Atlantis) in the song Black Butterfly. How did this interaction between the band and Clementine take place in the recording studio?
Tosso: We know Clementine already from tours together with Visions of Atlantis and Melted Space. So we already had a good picture of her great vocal skills and thought it would be an exciting idea to have her as a guest vocalist in “Black Butterfly”. I think the result turned out fantastic.
Elina: We wanted a singer with a different kind of voice to mine, that would bring another character and contrast to the song. “Black Butterfly” is a perfect choice as it gives the opportunity to bring out both of our voices while still blending them together and the division of the verses and other parts also worked very naturally. We were very fortunate that Clementine was able to travel to the studio during these difficult times and recording with her was a great experience! I hope we get to play the song live one day.
LMA: Elina Siirala is the newest member of the band and has shown her vocal qualities in The Last Viking. What evolution have you identified as a band from this change in the vocal role?
Tosso: Actually our newest member is our guitarist Micki Richter, who added some great guitar solos to the album. Elina is in the band since more than 4 years and we played many worldwide tours and festivals and also spent a lot of time in the studio together. So there is a strong bond and trust within the band, which is great to be able to focus on new music. Elina has a very powerful, warm voice with a classical background, which is the perfect match for our bombastic, opulent and nordic music.
LMA: Leaves' Eyes is one of the references of Viking Metal in recent times, and one of the motivations that led them to develop this musical concept has its origin in Alex's family roots. This Viking lifestyle was taken further in a documentary called The Viking Spirit which is included in one of the special editions of this album. Could you tell us about this project?
Alex: I love Vikings and yes, I'm also sword fighter in the Viking reenactment scene. I'm doing this for many years, training every week, going to battles, camps, events and tournaments to fight and having Viking friends all over the world. The group JOMSBORG which I'm part of is the biggest modern Viking army and international group out there based in many countries and several continents. Like you said, my father was even from the area at the Baltic Sea where the Jomsborg saga was born. So since I take part in all these crazy battles, of course I also love to make music about these historic events, like the decisive Battle at Stamford Bridge which is part of the saga of Norse king Hardarda. With the album we also released the DVD “Viking Spririt” which is a over 90 min film documentary where you can find out a lot of the fascination of Viking Life style, living history, Norse mythology and connection to the music of Leaves' Eyes. I guess the Vikings left many significant footprints in a lot of countries that's probably one of the reasons that legends, traditions and sagas are still alive and people from all over the world falling in love with Viking history. By the way the soundtrack of “Viking Spirit” is also great and available like the movie on the Artbook edition of the new album!
LMA: We know that due to the pandemic it is not possible for the bands to return to the stage. Have you considered other alternatives to promote The Last Viking?
Elina: Right now, we are putting a European tour together for the second half of 2021. We are positive that live music and metal will come back next year. Live streams can never replace the excitement and experience of a real live show.
