Bendida es una banda búlgara de Fantasy Metal fundada en 2008 por el guitarrista Vinnie Atanasov. La combinación de elementos clásicos y el metal es su principal característica en la que abordan temas mitológicos, fantásticos y ficticios creando una armonía musical que considera la instrumentación y la parte lírica. Como parte de la promoción de su segundo álbum First of the Heroes tuvimos la oportunidad de entrevistar a Kremena Nikolova quien nos platicará acerca de la banda, su más reciente álbum y la evolución de la banda en los últimos años.
La Magia Absalon: Muchas gracias por aceptar esta entrevista para La Magia Absalon. ¿Podrías contarnos un poco sobre el origen de la banda?
Kremena Nikolova: ¡Hola, con mucho gusto!
Bendida es una banda de metal de Symphonic Fantasy Metal fundada en 2008 por el guitarrista, cantante y compositor Vinnie Atanasov. La banda apunta a un sonido original y único mediante la combinación de elementos del metal sinfónico, power metal, folk metal y en ocasiones incluimos elementos del progresivo, death, thrash, black metal y otros. Hacemos esto a nuestra manera tratando de mantenernos alejados de las influencias de otros grandes nombres del escenario mundial del metal. Nuestro equipo se enorgullece de tener músicos profesionales y talentosos y grandes personas al mismo tiempo. Las canciones de Bendida se basan en la fantasía, los mitos y leyendas, los cuentos de hadas y la ficción. La rítmica está influenciada por el folclore tradicional búlgaro. Hasta ahora tenemos dos álbumes oficiales: "Goddess of the Moon” (2017) y “First of the Heroes” (2020) y ya estamos trabajando en el tercero. Estamos felices de tener una parte de la familia Bendida frente al Coro Académico “Sveta Paraskeva” con la directora Galina Lukanova.

La Magia Absalon: El sonido de Bendida muestra una combinación interesante que denota la influencia de la música barroca mezclada con metal sinfónico y folk metal, ¿por qué llamarlo Fantasy Metal?
Kremena Nikolova: Bien, tenemos todos esos ingredientes en la cocina de Bendida. Hemos elegido “Fantasía” como descripción, debido a nuestros temas, letras y atmósfera. Todos sabemos que el frío de la fantasía es interminable y no tiene límites… en un mundo de fantasía todo puede pasar y siempre existe la opción de esperar lo inesperado. Preferimos escapar de las fronteras estrictas, por eso llamamos a nuestra música Fantasy Metal.
La Magia Absalon: Este año se lanzó el segundo álbum "First of the Heroes" donde la banda regresa al panorama musical luego de algunos años de ausencia, ¿qué evolución en términos musicales se identifican en este álbum en comparación con su debut lanzado en 2017?
Kremena Nikolova: Nunca tuvimos descansos de la escena musical durante este período. Estuvimos bastante activos con presentaciones en vivo, haciendo videos oficiales, trabajando en nuevas canciones y otras cosas relacionadas con la banda.
El sonido de nuestro segundo álbum es más rico porque nuestro equipo tuvo algunos cambios durante los últimos tres años y nuestro compositor Vinnie estaba feliz de escribir muchas más notas para los hermosos nuevos músicos con violín y corno francés. Hicieron que nuestro sonido fuera mucho más épico que antes. Otro cambio en nuestros arreglos vino al incluir un coro real en nuestro segundo álbum. Los talentosos amigos del coro académico Sveta Paraskeva participaron en “First of the Heroes”. Entonces, nuestro segundo álbum es un gran paso hacia arriba, también amamos el primero y es muy especial.
La Magia Absalon: ¿Cómo ha sido la respuesta de "First of the Heroes" por parte de la prensa y tus fans?
Kremena Nikolova: Recibimos muchas críticas y entrevistas encantadoras de los medios de metal y amables palabras de los fans de todo el mundo y la promoción continúa, esperamos que el álbum llegue lejos y llegue a una audiencia más grande pronto.
La Magia Absalon: Mitología, fantasía y ficción son temas centrales en las letras de Bendida. ¿Existe algún motivo a nivel personal o como banda para apropiarse de estos temas y trasladarlos al ámbito musical?
Kremena Nikolova: La persona responsable de nuestros temas es quien creó el mundo de fantasía de Bendida hace doce años: el Sr. Vinnie Atanasov. El resto de la banda se sintió atraído por la magia de sus letras y composiciones porque de alguna manera todos somos héroes mágicos y vivimos juntos en cada canción y cuento de hadas. En realidad, el apodo de mi escuela era “el hada buena”.
La Magia Absalon: En tu último disco, tienen la participación de Janika Gross (Haggard) en la canción "Vampire's Ball", ¿podrías contarnos cómo sucedió esta colaboración y sobre la dinámica que se generó con la banda en el proceso de grabación de esta canción?
Kremena Nikolova: Estamos muy contentos de tener la voz de Janika en nuestro dueto de “Vampires’ ’Ball”. Fue muy emocionante para nosotros cuando aceptó participar en la canción. Janika grabó sus partes vocales en Alemania, donde vive, y grabamos nuestra voz instrumental aquí en Sofia, Bulgaria en Zero Project Studio y la canción también incluye partes grabadas por el coro académico Sveta Paraskeva. La mezcla y masterización fueron realizadas por nuestro talentoso amigo, multi-instrumentista e ingeniero de sonido, Vladimir Bochev. Estamos planeando un nuevo video oficial para esta canción, ¡así que esten atentos!
La Magia Absalon: Desafortunadamente, este año ha sido caótico para la escena musical ya que los conciertos que permitían a las bandas promocionar su trabajo a nivel local e internacional se han detenido. ¿Cómo te ha afectado esta situación y cuáles son los próximos pasos para la banda?
Kremena Nikolova: Sí, fue un año difícil para todos nosotros ... y aún no ha terminado. Las bandas siguen cancelando conciertos y los que logran tocar en discotecas o pequeños festivales, tienen la restricción de tocar frente a media audiencia… gran parte de la afición también tiene miedo y prefiere no arriesgarse visitando conciertos. Hicimos la promoción de nuestro nuevo álbum aquí en Sofía y una promoción en Bucarest, Rumania porque el álbum fue lanzado por un sello rumano: "Psychosounds Music" y exactamente después de nuestro regreso de Rumania, las "puertas estaban cerradas" y todas nuestras fechas de gira de primavera fueron canceladas. Tuvimos la suerte de tener participación en algunos festivales locales y otros dos conciertos, uno de ellos para la promoción de nuevos videos.
La Magia Absalon: Bendida ha compartido escenario con bandas como Kamelot, Apocalyptica y Nightwish. ¿Qué aprendizaje les ha dejado este tipo de experiencias como banda?
Kremena Nikolova: Fue un gran honor para nosotros ser invitados a este festival e hicimos todo lo posible para prepararnos de la mejor manera para nuestra actuación.
Sí, fue el evento más grande que tuvimos que enfrentar como banda y hemos aprendido muchas cosas durante ese período. Hubo una especie de huracán que pasó por la banda y lo bueno es que seguimos a bordo y navegamos más fuertes que nunca.
La Magia Absalon: ¿Cuál sería la evolución que se identifica en el sonido de Bendida considerando que es una banda que comenzó alrededor de más de 10 años?
Kremena Nikolova: Habrá diferencias en el sonido del futuro, pero intentaremos mantener el espíritu que hace que nuestras canciones sean reconocibles.

Bendida is a Bulgarian Fantasy Metal band founded in 2008 by guitarist Vinnie Atanasov. The combination of classical elements and metal is their main characteristic in which they talk about mythological, fantastic and fictional themes creating a musical harmony that considers the instrumentation and the lyrical part. As part of the promotion of their second album First of the Heroes we had the opportunity to interview Kremena Nikolova who will tell us about the band, their most recent album and the evolution of the band in recent years.
La Magia Absalon: Thank you very much for accepting this interview for La Magic Absalon. Could you tell us a little about the origin of the band?
Kremena Nikolova: Hi, with pleasure!
Bendida is a Symphonic Fantasy metal band founded in 2008 by the guitar player, singer and song-writer Vinnie Atanasov. The band aims at original and unique sound by combining elements from Symphonic metal, Power metal; Folk metal and sometimes we include elements from progressive, death, thrash, black metal and others. We do this in our own way trying to stay apart from influences by other big names from the World metal stage. Our team is proud to have professional and talented musicians and great people in the same time. Bendida songs are based on Fantasy, myths and legends, fairytales and fiction. The rhythmic is influenced by the traditional Bulgarian Folklore. We’ve got so far two official Albums: “Goddess of the Moon (2017) and “First of the Heroes” (2020), already working on the third. We are happy to have part from Bendida family in the face of “Academic Choir “Sveta Paraskeva” with conductor Galina Lukanova.

La Magia Absalon: Bendida's sound shows an interesting combination that denotes the influence of baroque music mixed with symphonic metal and folk metal, why call it Fantasy Metal?
Kremena Nikolova: Right, we’ve got all those ingredients in Bendida’s kitchen. We have chosen “Fantasy” as description, because of our topics, lyrics and atmosphere. We all know that Fantasy cold be endless and have no limits…in a fantasy world everything may happen and there is always option to expect the unexpected. We prefer to escape from strict borders that are why we call our music - Fantasy Metal.
La Magia Absalon: The second album "First of the Heroes" was released this year where the band returns to the music scene after some years of absence, what evolution in musical terms are identified in this album compared to their debut album released in 2017?
Kremena Nikolova: We never had breaks from the music scene during this period. We were quite active with live performances, making official videos, working on new songs and other things connected with the band.
The sound of our second album is richer because our team had some changes during the last three years and our song writer Vinnie was happy to write much more notes for the beautiful new musicians with the violin and French horn. They made our sound even much more epic than before. Another change in our arrangements came by including a real choir in our second album. The talented friends from Academic choir - Sveta Paraskeva took part in “First of the Heroes”. So, our second album is a big step upstairs, we love the first one too and it’s a very special one.
La Magia Absalon: How has been the response to "First of the Heroes" from the press and your fans?
Kremena Nikolova: We got lots of lovely reviews and interviews from metal Medias and kind words from fans all over the World and the promotion goes on, we hope the album will get far and reach bigger audience soon.
La Magia Absalon: Mythology, fantasy and fiction are central themes in Bendida's lyrics. Is there any reason on a personal level or as a band to appropriate these themes and transfer them to the musical field?
Kremena Nikolova: The person responsible for our themes is the one who created Bendida’s fantasy world twelve years ago – Mr. Vinnie Atanasov. The rest of the band was attracted by the magic of his lyrics and compositions because we are all magical heroes somehow and we live together in each song and fairy-tale. Actually, my school nickname was “The Good Fairy”.
La Magia Absalon: In your lastest album, you have the participation of Janika Gross (Haggard) in the song "Vampire's Ball", could you tell us about how this collaboration happened and about the dynamics that were generated with the band in the process of recording of this song?
Kremena Nikolova: We are very happy to have Janika’s voice in our Vampires’ Ball duet. It was so exciting for us when she agreed to take part in the song. Janika recorded her vocal parts in Germany where she lives, we recorded our instrumental and vocals here in Bulgaria/Sofia, Zero Project Studio and the song also includes parts recorded by Academic choir Sveta Paraskeva. The mixing and mastering were made by our talented friend – multi-instrumentalist and sound engineer Mr. Vladimir Bochev. We are planning a new official video for this song so stay tuned!
La Magia Absalon: Unfortunately, this year has been chaotic for the music scene as the concerts that allowed bands to promote their work locally and internationally have stopped. How has this situation affected you and what are the next steps for the band?
Kremena Nikolova: Yes, it was a difficult year for all of us…and it’s not over yet. Bands keep on canceling concerts and those who manage to play in clubs or small festivals, have the restriction to play in front of Half-audience…big part of the fans are also scared and prefer not to take risk by visiting concerts. We made our New-album-promotion here in Sofia and one promotion in Romania/Bucharest, because the album was released by a Romanian label – “Psychosounds Music” and exactly after our returning from Romania, the “doors were locked” and all of our Spring-tour dates were canceled. We were lucky to have participation in few local Festivals and two other concerts, one of them for new video promotion.
La Magia Absalon: Bendida has shared the stage with bands like Kamelot, Apocalyptica and Nightwish. What learning has this type of experience left you as a band?
Kremena Nikolova: It was a great honor for us to be invited on this festival and it we did everything possible to prepare in the best way for our performance.
Yes, it was the biggest event that we had to face as a band, and we’ve learned a lot of things during that period. There was a kind of hurricane that passed through the band and the good part is that we are still on board and sailing on stronger than ever.
La Magia Absalon: What would be the evolution that is identified in the sound of Bendida considering that it is a band that began around more than 10 years?
Kremena Nikolova: There will be differences in the future sound, but we’ll try to keep the spirit that makes our songs recognizable.
