Omega Diatribe es una banda de origen húngaro que estuvo presente en el último MXChaos en su versión Día de la Muerte. Fundada en 2008 por Gergo Hájer (guitarra) y Ákos Szathmáry (bajo), actualmente están promocionando „Metanoia” su último álbum publicado en Septiembre a través de Metal Scrap Records. La Magia Absalon tuvo la oportunidad de platicar con los miembros fundadores de esta banda acerca de sus orígenes, su presentación dentro del MXChaos y el panorama musical en tiempos de pandemia.
La Magia Absalon: Muchas gracias por esta entrevista para La Magia Absalon. Omega Diatribe se define a sí misma como una banda de Extreme Groove Metal, pero cuando estaba escuchando su último álbum “Metanoia” también muestra influencia de otros géneros dentro de la escena del metal. ¿Podrías contarnos un poco sobre tus orígenes como banda y qué influencias musicales te han ayudado a consolidar tu sonido?
Gergo Hájer: Hola, gracias por invitarnos a La Magia Absalon. ¡Encantado de conocerlos a todos!
Cuando comenzamos Omega Diatribe en 2008 con Akos, teníamos una fuerte visión de lo que queríamos enfocar en nuestra música. Riffs pesados y enérgicos, grooves polirrítmicos y elementos psicodélicos. En general, las mayores influencias en nuestra música son bandas como Meshuggah, Slipknot, Machine Head, Tool, Korn, Sepultura, etc.… ya sabes, la era del groove metal de los 90/00, pero todavía escuchamos otros géneros de música como drum and bass, dub psicodélico, hip hop y raggae… intentamos hacer evolucionar todas estas experiencias musicales a partir de lo que también obtuvimos de estos géneros.
La Magia Absalon: Omega Diatribe refiere a un contrato firmado entre humanos y extraterrestres sobre el uso del planeta tierra. ¿Este concepto que se crea a partir del nombre se refleja en la parte musical de la banda?
Ákos Szathmáry: Claro. Si escuchas una canción de Omega Diatribe todos los días a partir de ahora, estarás a salvo (risas). En realidad, es más como una historia de fondo para el nombre de la banda. Queríamos darle sentido.
La Magia Absalon: ¿Cómo se desarrolló el proceso de escritura y grabación de "Metanoia”?
Gergo Hájer: Esta vez, cuando comencé a escribir canciones para Metanoia, conscientemente no escuché la música de otra banda porque no quería ser influenciado subconscientemente por otras bandas. Me gustaría escribir canciones por instinto. En este disco trabajamos con coproductores que nos ayudaron a ofrecer la mayor cantidad de cuerdas vocales en estas canciones. Todas las canciones han sido grabadas en nuestro propio estudio en el 515 Studio en Budapest, diseñadas y mezcladas por mí. La mayor parte de la sesión vocal se ha realizado en Stray Heart Records de la mano de Kiki. Luego enviamos las mezclas en bruto a Jens Bogren en Fascination Street Studios en Suecia, quien hizo un increíble master actualizado en nuestras canciones.
La Magia Absalon: ¿Cuál es el concepto detrás del arte de "Metanoia" y cómo se relaciona con la música?
Ákos Szathmáry: El significado de Metanoia es el cambio en la forma de vida de uno como resultado de la conversión espiritual. Le contamos este significado al artista conceptual David Metzger y él creó la obra de arte. En el interior del digipak puedes ver 3 caras que son las 3 formas, de la vida a la muerte de una persona que se convirtió en un ser iluminado. En la música, representa que abrimos algunas ventanas nuevas y dejamos entrar un poco de aire fresco. Cosas nuevas que nunca habíamos probado antes.
La Magia Absalon: Como es sabido por todos, la pandemia obligó a la cancelación de conciertos, sin embargo, también les abrió una posibilidad al participar en festivales vía streaming como MXChaos ¿Qué sentimientos les produce como banda cambiar una modalidad cara a cara a una virtual en lo que a conciertos se refiere?
Gergo Hájer: Esta locura pandémica apesta varias veces para nosotros, ya sabes. Acabamos de lanzar nuestro nuevo disco, hemos agendado 24 shows en Europa y solo pudimos hacer alrededor de 11 shows en Hungría. Pero debo decir que estos shows fueron uno de los mejores de nuestra carrera. El público está realmente entusiasmado con el nuevo disco y nos apoya al 100%.
Sobre el festival de streaming, fue un poco extraño porque nunca hemos hecho nada como esto, solo sesiones de estudio pregrabadas. Pero fue divertido, fuimos al estudio de nuestro amigo en Budapest, Hungría, en Pinewood Studios, donde los chicos pudieron difundir nuestra música vía streaming a través de MXChaos. La oportunidad vino de nuestro booker español Javier, quien agendó nuestro show en línea en MX Chaos. ¡Ojalá podamos hacer esto de nuevo!
La Magia Absalon: ¿Cuáles fueron los desafíos que enfrentaron al preparar su presentación en línea?
Ákos Szathmáry: Dado que tuvimos la oportunidad de hacerlo con los muchachos de Pinewood, técnicamente no nos causó un gran dolor de cabeza. Pero en ese momento no habíamos tocado en vivo desde marzo. Eso significa una omisión de seis meses. Así que tuvimos que hacer algunos ensayos. Por otro lado, somos más como chicos de "shows en vivo real", nos encanta interactuar con la audiencia durante el show y sentir la energía de la multitud mientras vibra con nosotros. Así que esa fue la parte difícil, dejar esto atrás y tocar en condiciones estériles en un estudio.
La Magia Absalon: ¿Cómo consideran la respuesta del público sobre su presentación durante MXChaos Dia de la Muerte?
Gergo Hájer: La respuesta del público fue increíble, nos acabamos de dar cuenta de que varios fanáticos latinos nos etiquetaron en Instagram y Facebook para enviar comentarios de que realmente les gustó nuestro show en línea.
La Magia Absalon: Con base en lo vivido durante la pandemia, ¿cómo consideran que será el panorama musical en el futuro?
Ákos Szathmáry: La industria musical del metal se ha estado deteriorando constantemente durante los últimos 10-15 años y esta pandemia es otro golpe para ella, que también se extiende a toda la industria. Es difícil predecir lo que sucederá en el futuro de la música. Solo espero que este sea nuestro mayor problema (risas). Si tuviera que adivinar, diría que habrá más y más shows en línea. Algunas bandas importantes podrán hacer cosas realmente únicas y profesionales para crear transmisiones vía streaming más interesantes. Por lo tanto, también se convierte en un modelo a seguir para bandas jóvenes. Espero que con el tiempo la generación joven necesite más y todavía quiera ir a ver conciertos en directo.
La Magia Absalon: ¿Cuáles son los planes futuros de Omega Diatribe?
Ákos Szathmáry: Todavía queremos ir de gira con 'Metanoia' y ya hemos agendado algunos conciertos para el próximo año. Espero que podamos hacerlos realidad. ¿Qué puedo decir en esta situación? Incertidumbre... grabaremos un nuevo video musical y no dejaremos de hacer música.

OMEGA DIATRIBE'S GERGO HÁJER AND ÁKOS SZATHMÁRY INTERVIEW
Omega Diatribe is a hungarian band that who were present in the last MXChaos Dia de la Muerte. Founded in 2008 by Gergo Hájer (guitar) and Ákos Szathmáry (bass), they are currently promoting “Metanoia” their latest album released in September through Metal Scrap Records. La Magia Absalon had the opportunity to talk with the founding members of this band about their origins, their presentation in the MXChaos and the music scene in times of pandemic.
La Magia Absalon: Thank you very much for this interview for La Magia Absalon. Omega Diatribe defines itself as an Extreme Groove Metal band, but when I was listening your latest album “Metanoia” it also shows influence from other genres within the metal scene. Could you tell us a bit about your origins as a band and what musical influences have helped to consolidate your sound?
Gergo Hájer: Hi there, thanks for having us at La Magia Absalon. Nice to meet y’all!
When we started Omega Diatribe back in 2008 with Akos we had a strong vision what we want to focus in our music. Heavy riffs on high-energy level, Polyrhythmic grooves and Psychedelic elements. Overall the biggest influences on our music is such bands like Meshuggah, Slipknot, Machine Head, Tool, Korn, Sepultura and so on… you know mostly the 90’s/00’s groove metal era but we still listen to other genres music like drum and bass, psychedelic dub, hip hop and raggae… we tried to evolve all this musical experiences what we’ve got from these genres as well.
La Magia Absalon: Omega Diatribe refers to a contract signed between humans and aliens about the use of planet earth. Is this concept that you create from the name is reflected in the musical part of the band?
Ákos Szathmáry: Sure. If you listen to an Omega Diatribe song every day from now, you will be saved (laughing). Actually it’s more like a background story for the band name. We wanted to give meaning to it.
La Magia Absalon: How did the writing and recording process for "Metanoia” develop?
Gergo Hájer: This time when I started to wrote songs for Metanoia, I consciously did not listen to other band’s music because I didn’t want to be influenced subconsciously by other bands. I would like to wrote songs by my instinct. On this record we worked co-producers who helped us to deliver the most string vocals on these songs. All the songs has been recorded at our own studio at 515 Studio in Budapest, engineered and mixed by me. Most of the vocal session has been done at Stray Heart Records under the hands of Kiki. Then we sent out the raw mixes to Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios in Sweden who did an amazing up-to-date master on our songs.
La Magia Absalon: What is the concept behind the art of "Metanoia" and how does it tie into the music?
Ákos Szathmáry: Metanoia’s meaning is the change in one's way of life resulting from spiritual conversion. We told this meaning to David Metzger concept artist and he created the artwork. On the inside of the digipak you can see 3 faces which are the 3 forms – from life to death - of a person who became an enlightened being. In the music it represents that we opened some new windows and let some fresh air in. New things we’ve never tried before.
La Magia Absalon: As is known to all, the pandemic forced the cancellation of concerts, however, it also opened a possibility for you by participating in streaming festivals, such as MXchaos.What feelings does it produce as a band to change one modality face to face to a virtual one as far as concerts are concerned?
Gergo Hájer: This pandemic madness sucks multiple times for us, you know. We just released our brand new record, we have booked 24 shows around Europe and we can only do it around 11 shows around Hungary. But I must say these shows were one of the best on our carreer. the crowd really digging the new record and support us 100%.
About the streaming-festival, it was a bit weird because we never did anything like this, only pre-recorded studio sessions. But it was fun, we went to our friend's studio in Budapest, Hungary at Pinewood Studios where the guys able to spread our music via streaming services through MX Chaos. The opportunity came from our spanish booker Javier, who booked our online show at MX Chaos. Hopefully we can do this again!
La Magia Absalon: What were the challenges you faced in preparing your presentation online?
Ákos Szathmáry: Since we had the opportunity to do it with the Pinewood guys, it didn’t cause us a big headache technically. But at that time we hadn’t played live since March. That means a six-month omission. So we had to do some rehearsals. On the other side we are more like ‘real live show’ guys, we love to interact with the audience during the show and feel the energy of the crowd as they pulsate with us. So that was the hard part, to leave this behind and play under sterile conditions in a studio.
La Magia Absalon: How do you consider the public's response about your presentation during MXchaos Dia de la Muerte?
Gergo Hájer: The crowd response was amazing, we just realized that so many latino fans just tagged us on Instagram and Facebook to send a feedback that they really dig our online show.
La Magia Absalon: Based on what was experienced during the pandemic, how do you think the music scene will be in the future?
Ákos Szathmáry: The metal-music industry has been steadily deteriorating for the past 10-15 years and this pandemic is another blow to it, which also extends to the whole industry. It’s difficult to predict what will happen in the future of music. I just hope that this will be our biggest problem (laughing). If I had to guess I would say there will be more and more online shows. Some major bands will be able to do really unique and professional stuff to create more interesting streaming shows. Thus, it becomes a role model for young bands as well. I hope that over time the young generation needs more and they still want to go and see live concerts.
La Magia Absalon: What are Omega Diatribe's future plans?
Ákos Szathmáry: We still want to go on tour with ‘Metanoia’ and we have already booked some shows for next year. Hope we can make them happen. What can I say in this situation? Uncertainty.. We will record a new music video and we won’t stop making music.
