Coldun comenzó como un proyecto solista que ha publicado dos álbumes de larga duración. “Grand Sun Ritual” es el nombre de su último álbum de estudio que se caracteriza por una fusión de sonidos propios del doom y post-metal con letras que nos invitan a reflexionar acerca de la vida y la muerte. La Magia Absalón tuvo la oportunidad de conversar con su vocalista en la que nos habla de este proceso de transición de proyecto solista a banda y del proceso creativo detrás de “Grand Sun Ritual”.
LMA: COLDUN comenzó como un proyecto en solitario, ¿en qué momento decidiste hacer esa transición de pasar de un proyecto solista a una banda?
Coldun: Después de los dos primeros álbumes que escribí solo, pensé que quería cambiar algo y subir al siguiente nivel. Todavía me gustan mucho los primeros álbumes, pero no quiero volver a hacer lo mismo. Así que busqué y encontré buenos amigos y grandes músicos y formamos COLDUN como banda para el nuevo álbum.
LMA: ¿Cómo benefició este cambio en la dinámica de trabajo que se ha desarrollado en COLDUN desde un nivel creativo y musical?
Coldun: Con el nuevo álbum “Grand Sun Ritual” la forma de escribir música cambió mucho. En los álbumes anteriores, escribí la música completa por mi cuenta. Ahora, una gran parte del nuevo álbum está escrito como banda porque quiero subir al siguiente nivel y puedes escuchar esto con claridad, especialmente en las partes de guitarra y batería. Me gusta mucho el resultado. Suena mucho más pesado y apretado, pero a la vez emocional y con una atmósfera profunda y líneas melódicas pegadizas. Así que ahora hemos encontrado el equilibrio perfecto entre esos mundos.
LMA: Grand Sun Ritual es el nombre de su tercer álbum de estudio. Las canciones son una invitación a reflexionar sobre la vida y la muerte, ¿hay algún interés particular en abordar esos temas dentro de la propuesta musical de la banda?
Coldun: La letra del nuevo álbum tiene que ver con cuestiones de significado, vida y muerte. Todo esto ahora con un tenor básico radicalmente positivo basado en la convicción de que la muerte no es absoluta y ciertamente no es un fin. Además, tejo pensamientos que he desarrollado durante los últimos años en algunos viajes en áreas muy informativas. La idea básica, sin embargo, sigue siendo un optimismo espiritual o, si se quiere, filosófico, basado en el conocimiento de que nada es tan malo como nos gusta creer en nuestra auto-mortificación sadomasoquista.
Y aunque la letra es tan positiva por dentro, el nivel más alto a la hora de leer tal vez deba entenderse como melancolía, junto con la melancolía aún predominante de la música. Esto es, por así decirlo, un arco de tensión entre la melancolía obvia y el optimismo radical más profundo.
LMA: La vida y la muerte son conceptos que se han redefinido desde la pandemia. ¿Consideras que Grand Sun Ritual ha adquirido un significado especial debido a esta situación?
Coldun: La situación actual no afectó la escritura del nuevo álbum.
La música y también las palabras de "Grand Sun Ritual" no se refieren a temas reales, son atemporales.
LMA: Musicalmente, Grand Sun Ritual es un disco interesante ya que fusiona el metal progresivo con otros sonidos como el jazz o el grunge creando un estilo muy particular. ¿Cómo se desarrolla este proceso creativo dentro de la banda?
Coldun: El ambiente especial de COLDUN se puede escuchar desde el primero hasta el último álbum, pero los detalles se han desarrollado mucho.
Las bandas que realmente me gustan no se parecen tanto a COLDUN. Por alguna razón, el resultado que obtengo cuando creo música suena muy diferente a todo lo que escucho la mayor parte del tiempo.
En el nuevo disco, que hicimos por primera vez como una banda real, tal vez suene un poco como las bandas que escucho cada vez en vivo.
Crecí con el clásico heavy metal de los 80 y así hasta hoy, pero COLDUN suena muy diferente desde el principio. Hay una atmósfera melancólica, amplia y profunda en COLDUN que vino de algún lugar del universo o de mi nariz izquierda, no lo sé exactamente, pero está ahí en cada canción de COLDUN y no suena como Running Wild.
LMA: ¿Cómo describirías Grand Sun Ritual con sus propias palabras?
Coldun: Es un viaje: comienza en tu corazón, atraviesa el universo y termina en tu alma. Mecedora amplia, profunda, atmosférica, pero también ligera y, a veces, áspera y tensa.
LMA: ¿Cuáles son los planes futuros de la banda?
Coldun: En este momento, nos concentramos completamente en la promoción y publicación del nuevo álbum "Grand Sun Ritual". Veamos qué sucede a continuación cuando termine este asunto de la Corona.

Coldun started out as a solo project that has released two full-length albums. "Grand Sun Ritual" is the name of their latest studio album that is characterized by a fusion of doom and post-metal sound with lyrics that invite us to reflect on life and death. La Magia Absalón had the opportunity to talk with their vocalist in which he tells us about this process of transition from solo project to band and the creative process behind “Grand Sun Ritual”.
LMA: COLDUN started as a solo project, at what point did you decide to make that transition from going from a solo project to a band?
Coldun: After the first two albums that I wrote alone, I thought that I want to change something and climb the next level. I still like the first albums a lot but I don’t want to do the same thing again. So I looked for and find good friends and great musicians and we formed COLDUN as a band for the new album.
LMA: How did this change in the work dynamics that has already been developed at COLDUN benefit from a creative and musical level?
Coldun: With the new album “Grand Sun Ritual” the way of writing music changed a lot. On the previous albums, I wrote the complete music on my own. Now a big part of the new album is written as a band because I want to climb a next level and you can hear this clearly, especially in the guitar- und drumparts. I really like the result. It sounds much heavier und tighter but yet emotional and with a deep atmosphere and catchy melody lines. So now we have found the perfect balance between that worlds.
LMA: Grand Sun Ritual is the name of your third studio album. The songs are an invitation to reflect on life and death, is there any particular interest to address those themes within the band's musical proposal?
Coldun: The lyrics of the new album are all about questions of meaning, life and death. All of this now with a radically positive basic tenor based on the conviction that death is not absolute and certainly not an end. In addition, I weave thoughts that I have developed over the last few years on some trips in very informative areas. The basic idea, however, remains a spiritual or, if you will, philosophical optimism, based on the knowledge that nothing is as bad as we like to believe in our sadomasochistic self-mortification.
And although the lyrics are so positive inside, the top level when reading is perhaps to be understood as melancholy, together with the still predominant melancholy mood of the music. This is, if you will, an arc of tension between obvious melancholy and deeper-lying radical optimism.
LMA: Life and death are concepts that have been redefined since the pandemic. Do you consider that Grand Sun Ritual has acquired a special meaning because of this situation?
Coldun: The current situation didnt affect the writing of the new album.
The music and also the words of “Grand Sun Ritual” doesnt concern actual themes – they are timeless.
LMA: Musically, Grand Sun Ritual is an interesting album as it fuses progressive metal with other sounds such as jazz or grunge creating a very particular style. How does this creative process develop within the band?
Coldun: The special mood of COLDUN you can hear from the first to the last album but the details have developed a lot.
The bands I really like don’t sound so much like COLDUN. For some reason the result that come out when I create music sounds very different to all that I hear the most time.
On the new record, which we first time did as a real band, it sounds maybe the first time a little bit like bands I hear in my every time live.
I grow up with the classic 80ies heavy metal stuff and like that till today but COLDUN sounds very different from the beginning. There is this melancholy and wide and deep atmosphere in COLDUN that came from somewhere the universe or out of my left nose – I don’t know it exactly - but it’s there in every COLDUN song and don’t sound like Running Wild.
LMA: How would you describe Grand Sun Ritual in your own words?
Coldun: It a journey - starts in your heart, leads through the universe and ends back in your soul. Wide, deep, athmospheric, but also light and sometimes harsch and tightening rocking.
LMA: What are the future plans for the band?
Coldun: Right now, we fully concentrate on the promotion and publishing of the new album “Grand Sun Ritual”. Let’s see what happens next when this Corona-thing is over.
