Goditha es el nombre de la ópera rock creada por la compositora Elina Englezou y el productor Bob Katsionis (ex-Firewind) que se publicó en septiembre del año pasado. Este proyecto combina la esencia del metal con el sonido de flautas, clarinetes, violines y otros instrumentos orquestales, es una obra musical extremadamente melódica, pero al mismo tiempo llena de tensión y energía, cubierta por una atmósfera que atrae al oyente a un torbellino de emociones contradictorias.
Para conocer un poco más del proyecto, La Magia Absalón tuvo la oportunidad de entrevistar a los creadores de esta ópera metal: Elina Englezou y Bob Katsionis.

LMA: Muchas gracias por aceptar esta entrevista para The Magic Absalon. Cuando escuchamos sobre Bob Katsionis, una de las bandas que nos viene a la mente es Firewind, sin embargo, tu presencia dentro de la escena sigue presente y esta vez junto a Elina Englezou, son la mente maestra detrás de Goditha. ¿Cómo se dio el proceso para ser parte de esta ópera rock?
Bob Katsionis: Siempre es ese amigo común que tienes y la buena reputación, por lo que no fue tarde hasta que Elina fue traída a mi estudio. Fue un proyecto muy ambicioso y difícil de completar, así que eso lo hizo más desafiante para mí, ya que hago cualquier cosa, desde pop/rock hasta thrash/prog/black metal, ¡eso fue algo interesante!
LMA: La participación que tuviste en esta ópera rock fue para crear la parte instrumental con Elina Englezou. ¿Cómo se desarrolló este proceso en el estudio de grabación? Desde tu perspectiva como músico y productor, ¿cuál es el desafío de crear un álbum conceptual como Goditha?
Bob Katsionis: Fue divertido. Tomó mucho tiempo. Pero al final valió la pena. ¡Entonces, Elina me traía los proyectos de Cubase y eran un laberinto de ideas y canales! Siempre trataba de detectar las partes más fuertes y débiles y luego, ella me dejaba hacer "lo que piense". Es bueno trabajar con personas que confían en tu instinto musical. Y por alguna razón confiaba en ella todo el tiempo, ¡jaja! Ella siempre tuvo la imagen más grande mientras yo la veía como una canción cada vez.
LMA: Goditha contó con la participación de diferentes artistas dentro del panorama musical griego. ¿Cómo se desarrolló el proceso de grabación con ellos en el estudio de grabación?
Bob Katsionis: Lo súper bueno fue que Elina tenía su propio espacio de grabación, así que la mayoría de las voces se grabaron allí y luego las llevó a mi estudio para trabajar. Ella es un pequeño diablo, hizo tanto trabajo que no lo podía creer. En cuanto al resto de instrumentos, afortunadamente, pude tocar como la mayoría de ellos, así que hubo menos gente involucrada. ¡Esto siempre es bueno!
LMA: Dentro del proceso creativo que involucró a Goditha, ¿hubo algún retroceso debido a la pandemia?
Bob Katsionis: No, la pandemia no fue un problema. Pero hubo algo peor. Una plaga también conocida como Ego de Singer. Eso nos mató y perdimos algo así como un año por ello. Pero al final, fue un buen revés porque la música final solo presenta las mejores actuaciones y personalidades.
LMA: ¿Qué satisfacciones te deja esta ópera de metal como músico y productor?
Bob Katsionis: Es algo de lo que estoy realmente orgulloso. Realmente orgulloso. Me dio aún más atención y experiencia de lo que imaginaba y es uno de los álbumes en los que no tocaría ni una sola cosa. No puedes hacer Metal Opera todos los días como productor, ¿verdad?
LMA: ¿Componer y producir para una ópera rock como Goditha es diferente a otras bandas en las que has participado como Outloud?
Bob Katsionis: Definitivamente. Aquí toda la música fue escrita originalmente por Elina y luego tuve la libertad de condimentarla como quisiera. Me encanta trabajar así.
LMA: Quiero agradecerle por el tiempo asignado para esta entrevista y para terminar, ¿qué pueden esperar los fans de Goditha para aquellos que no han tenido la oportunidad de escuchar este proyecto?
Bob Katsionis: Bahhh, no es nada especial. ¡Solo una historia extraña con buena música, 17 grandes voces y como 90 minutos épicos!

INTERVIEW WITH BOB KATSIONIS (GODITHA)
Goditha is the name of the rock opera created by composer Elina Englezou and producer Bob Katsionis (ex-Firewind) that was released in September last year. This project combines the essence of metal with the sound of flutes, clarinets, violins and other orchestral instruments, it is an extremely melodic musical work, but at the same time full of tension and energy, covered by an atmosphere that attracts the listener to a whirlwind of conflicting emotions.

LMA: Thank you very much for accepting this interview for La Magia Absalon. When we hear about Bob Katsionis, one of the bands that comes to mind is Firewind, however, your presence within the scene is still present and this time along with Elina Englezou, they are the mastermind behind Goditha. How did you get that approach to be part of this rock opera?
Bob Katsionis: It’s always that common friend you have and the good reputation, so it wasn’t late until Elina was brought in my studio. It was a very ambitious and hard to complete project so that made it extra challenging for me, since I do anything from pop/rock to thrash/prog/black metal so, that was something interesting!
LMA: The participation you had in this rock opera was to create the instrumental part with Elina Englezou. How did this process develop in the recording studio? From your perspective as a musician and producer, what is the challenge of creating a concept album like Goditha?
Bob Katsionis: It was fun. It took a lot of time. But it worth it in the end. So, Elina was bringing me the Cubase projects and they were a labyrinth of ideas and channels! I was trying everytime to spot the stronger and weaker parts and then, she was letting me do “whatever I think”. It’s good to work with people who trust your music instinct. And for some reason I was trusting hers all the time, haha! She always had the bigger picture while I was looking at it as one song every time.
LMA: Goditha involved the participation of different artists within the Greek music scene. How did the recording process develop with them in the recording studio?
Bob Katsionis: The super good thing was that Elina had her own recording space so, most of the vocals were recorded there and then she was bringing them to my studio to work. She’s a little devil, she did SO much work I couldn’t believe it! As for the rest of instruments, luckily, I was able to perform like most of them myself so it was less people involved. This is always good!
LMA: Within the creative process that Goditha involved, were there any setbacks due to the pandemic?
Bob Katsionis: No, the pandemic wasn’t an issue. But there was something worse. A plague also known as Singer’s Ego. That killed us and we lost something like a year for it. But in the end, it was a good setback cause the final music only features top performances and personalities.
LMA: What satisfactions does this metal opera leave you as a musician and producer?
Bob Katsionis: It’s something I’m really proud of. Like, really proud. It gave me even more attention and experience than what I imagined and it’s one of the albums I wouldn’t touch a single thing on. You don’t get to do Metal Operas everyday as a producer, do you?
LMA: Is composing and producing for a rock opera like Goditha different from the bands you've participated like Outloud?
Bob Katsionis: Definitely. Here all the music was originally written by Elina and then I had the freedom to spice it up the way I wanted. I love working like that.
LMA: I want to thank you for the time allotted for this interview and to finish, what can fans expect about Goditha for those who have not had the opportunity to listen to this project?
Bob Katsionis: Bahhh, it’s nothing special. Just a weird story with great music, 17 great voices and like 90 minutes of epicness!
